60's (or beginning of 70's) compilation (just for me) !

Hello guys, I wish to make a huge compilation (150 titles aproximately) with some of the best songs of the 60's like "Pain't it black" or "Waterloo sunset".

Have you any ideas on the best or most popular songs, not necessarly on Acclaim tops ? Or maybe hidden jewels ?

Thanks you in advance for your marvelous ideas !

Not exactly sure what you're looking for, but these should be good:

? & the Mysterians - 96 Tears
13th Floor Elevators - You're Gonna Miss Me
Frank Zappa - Peaches En Regalia
Os Mutantes - Panis et Cincenses
The Millennium - Prelude/To Claudia on Thursday
Nick Drake - Day is Done
Love - Stephanie Knows Who
Sam & Dave - Hold On, I'm Coming
Yardbirds - Heart Full of Soul
Captain Beefheart - Moonlight on Vermont
Count Five - Psychotic Reaction

These choices are really random; I hope this helped.

The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon

Thanks. I look for a compilation of great songs of 60's with huge hits and some unknown songs. It's for a young colleague (20 years) who absolutly don't know this period.
Like : Nights in white satin, A whiter shade of pale, sunny afternoon, Lady d'arbanville, etc.
More British than American maybe ?!

No french songs? Gainsbourg, Dutronc, Nino Ferrer, Antoine, Jacqueline Taïeb, Charlotte Leslie, etc. ? There are some things worth listening around that time.

Oui, mais ça je peux lui faire découvrir sans problèmes, je connais très bien. Par contre beaucoup moins les chansons sixties en anglais.

Ah bon ! Commence par les listes du site alors, il y a peut-être déjà de quoi faire .

In terms of what you are looking for, these are the best-selling singles worldwide released in the 1960s/early 1970s:

The Beatles - I Want to Hold Your Hand
Procul Harum - A Whiter Shade of Pale
The Monkees - I'm a Believer
The Animals - The House of the Rising Sun
The Archies - Sugar, Sugar
The Beatles - Can't Buy Me Love
The Beatles - Hey Jude
The Beatles - She Loves You
The Bee Gees - Massachusetts
Engelbert Humperdinck - Release Me
Mary Hopkin - Those Were the Days
The Jackson 5 - I Want You Back
Tom Jones - Delilah
Scott McKenzie - San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)
Elvis Presley - Surrender
Jeannie C. Riley - Harper Valley PTA
Shocking Blue - Venus
The Tokens - The Lion Sleeps Tonight
The Tornados - Telstar
Neil Diamond - Cracklin' Rosie
Danyel Gerard - Butterfly
The Jackson 5 - I'll Be There
Mungo Jerry - In the Summertime
The New Seekers - I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing
Donny Osmund - Puppy Love
The Partridge Family - I Think I Love You
Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water
Three Dog Night - Joy to the World
Dawn - Knock Three Times

To say that some of these aren't to my taste would be an understatement, but they do seem to be emblematic of the era for the most part. Also, I've tried to leave out the really stupid ones.

As someone who has only fairly recently discovered 1960s/early 1970s music to the depth it merits, and who is still learning every day, I'd say anything by Dylan, The Beach Boys and above all The Beatles wouldn't be a bad start. From there, a lot of british invasion, primarily the Stones and The Kinks, mixed with psychedelic and a few oddballs like Zappa, Syd Barrett and The Velvet Underground should suffice as an elementary education.

As tends to happen with the 60s, don't forget the Zombies! Brief Candles is an incredible song, as well as Time Of The Season.

Thanks to all, it's exactly what I'm searching.
Of course, I use AM for the big hits. And I know some of them. But there are often beautiful songs who don't make hits !

It's essentially the one hits guys I don't know.
