#1 Genesis vs. #4 The Stone Roses

#1 The Cure vs. #5 Muddy Waters

Re: UMT 3.8...

Slicks Votes... DM... DRE... STONE ROSES... BENETAR... THE CURE... DEVO... ARETHA... PET SHOP BOYS...

Slicks Predictions...
DEPECHE -- Franz will put up a fight...
TOSS UP -- Chances are whoever wins will do so in a cloud of smoke...
GENESIS -- As much as I want The Stone Roses to continue on, my guy says they won't...
THE CURE -- Narrow victory...
TOSS UP -- Weakest of the bunch, so many good artists will get knocked out while one of these two continue on...
TOSS UP -- Aretha should narrowly win in what will be the toughest choice for many...
PET SHOP BOYS -- If they win, it will only be by a few votes...

Re: UMT 3.8...

#1 Depeche Mode
Not a Franz Ferdinand fan, though they have a few good songs.
#7 Willie Nelson
Dre is all about marketing. He helped to make the genre all about gangster posing.
#4 The Stone Roses
Not a fan of anything Phil Collins has touched. This matchup looks like it'll be another one of those 'AM voters vs non-AM voters' deals.
#2 The Bee Gees
#1 The Cure
Love Muddy Waters, but it's The Cure
#7 Devo
Love post-punk and all associated genres.
#4 The Velvet Underground
Tough to vote against Aretha. I would have voted for her against almost anyone else this week.
#6 Jeff Buckley
Grace is one of my favorite albums ever. Not a fan of Pet Shop Boys.

Re: UMT 3.8...

1. Depeche Mode: I love FF, but Violator won't let me vote against Depeche.
6. Dr. Dre: I don't really care about either of these artists all too much, but I like Dre a bit more.
4. The Stone Roeses: I quite like their debut, which is enough to win this matchup.
3. Pat Benatar: This was tough, but I have a Benatar comp and nothing by the Bee Gees, so that made my decision. I really need to pick up some Bee Gees stuff.
1. The Cure: my favorite band- easy task.
7. Devo: I'm more familiar with them.
4. The Velvet Underground: Mrs. Potato Head can shove it. A rose was never really a rose...
2. Pet Shop Boys: Easy win!

Re: UMT 3.8...

Franz Ferdinand (by a landslide)
Willie Nelson
the Stone Roses(early Genesis was pretty cool especially Peter Gabriels theatrics on stage. It puts Lady Gaga to shame)
the Bee Gees
the Cure
Tommy James
Velvet Underground
Jeff Buckley (not a fan of either though)

Really? All these matchups of distinctly second-tier artists, and then we get hit with Aretha vs. the Velvets?

Re: UMT 3.8...

Franz Ferdinand
Willie Nelson
The Stone Roses
The Bee Gees
Muddy Waters
Devo
The Velvet Underground
Pet Shop Boys

Difficult to vote against the Cure, but I’ll reserve comment until the next round, since I expect them to get past Muddy.

However, as eeeeveryone else has noted, VU vs. Aretha—a matchup of two of AM’s top 25 artists—is just ridiculous at this stage (and a useful reminder that UMT’s priorities and AM’s are quite different).

Aretha Franklin is, without question, the most important and influential female vocalist of the rock era. I yield to none in my admiration for her.

But VU…the fact that they’re a 4 seed is just baffling to me. Here we have:

1. The most influential indie/underground/avant-garde/whatever band ever.
2. The most influential American band ever.
3. The second- or third-most influential band of the frickin’ SIXTIES.

In the first eight years after VU formed, they were known to the cognoscenti, but barely tinted the rock landscape otherwise. But, since 1973, the history of the genre is absolutely dominated by their influence. There is no understanding the work of Bowie, Eno, T. Rex, Iggy Pop, Talking Heads, Blondie, Joy Division, R.E.M., Pixies, Nirvana, the Replacements, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, Animal Collective—basically all that we are pleased to call indie or alternative or progressive—without a deep appreciation for the accomplishments of Lou, John, Sterling and Mo.

And the UMT is probably going to lose them today. So, that sucks.

Re: UMT 3.8...

Depeche Mode
Dr. Dre
Genesis
The Bee Gees
The Cure
Devo
The Velvet Underground
Jeff Buckley

All of these were weirdly close for me...

Re: UMT 3.8...

#1 Depeche Mode

#4 The Stone Roses
#2 The Bee Gees
#1 The Cure
#7 Devo
#4 The Velvet Underground
#6 Jeff Buckley

Rather than repeat how unfortunate the Aretha/Velvet match-up is, I would like to point out how The Stone Roses are deeply better than Genisis. Really hope they pull it out.

Re: UMT 3.8...

winners in 3.8...
Depeche Mode 59.5% / Franz Ferdinand 40.5%
Willie Nelson 51.4% / Dr. Dre 48.6%
The Stone Roses 51.4% / Genesis 48.6%
The Bee Gees 57.1% / Pat Benetar 42.9%
The Cure 75.7% / Muddy Waters 24.3%
Devo 65.7% / Tommy James 34.3%
The Velvet Underground 54.1% / Aretha Franklin 45.9%
Pet Shop Boys 51.4% / Jeff Buckley 48.6%

It seems like such a shame to see Aretha out and Devo moving on... 3 matchups decided by one vote...
