2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

At long last (and two months late, sadly) I present the results of the 2010 AMF Artist poll! In total, there were 39 ballots, topping the participation of the 2008 poll. I sincerely apologize for the delay, but having lost the master list when my laptop died, it was a big chore to get it all up and running again! Nonetheless, the list is now ready to be unveiled!

A special thank you to all of those who participated- you are what makes the poll tick and what makes it interesting.

So here are your 39 participants for the 2010 poll!

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

And now for the format for the top 100!

Among other things, I will include:

*AM Rank
*Rank in the 2008 Poll
*Number of Votes
*Total Points
*All Nominees and Places
*Top Albums in 2010 Poll
*Top Songs in 2010 Poll

The top albums/songs will proceed as follows:

If the artist has fewer than 5 entries, all will be listed.

If the artist has 5 or more entries, I'll list all of them that made the overall top 1000, up to 10 each.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

Excellent job, like usual.
Perfect presentation ! Normal résults yet !
Just one question : how many artists are citated in all ?

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

The solo careers of Paul Simon and (especially) Eric Clapton on the Top 100 are really surprising. I suppose that some voted thinking on their whole career.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

Moonbeam

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

Surprisingly nobody voted for both Wire and Clapton ^^

Wire was my #104, so no points from me, but I'm glad they could crack the top 100 this time. On the other hand, Clapton...

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

Numbers 100-96 are absolutely masterful. Shame Clapton is ahead of them, but Wire at 93 is so cool that it doesn't matter. Great presentation Moonbeam!

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

Haha, what a typically Animal Collectivey picture.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

Super Furry Animals at 197 must be one of the biggest drop compared with the previous poll. I remember SFA and Guided by Voices being the most surprising artists in the top 100 for me.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

Spectacular presentation Moonbeam; it was worth the wait!

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

I'm guessing you lost the comments when your hard drive died Moonbeam?

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

I still have my comments so I'll just list them as artists are revealed.

41. Parliament/Funkadelic- I have to put both into one although it might be cheating. Both had their ups and downs but they always had that groove.

19. Paul Simon- Where Simon and Garfunkel portrayed youthful idealism, Simon went off alone to share the stories of being an adult and it worked beautifully.

John

Most of them, yes. :( I figured it would be better to exclude them all than to include only a select few.

Looking forward to the rest of the list.

I would never put Billy Joel in my list, but let me take this opportunity to welcome this "new" group of soft-rockers to the AM forum. It's nice to have some counterbalance to the indie-hypers.

Btw, very nice picture of Sly and the Family Stone!

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

This was really worth the wait. Fantastic job on the presentation so far, Moonbeam!

There's so much for me to process at this point that it's hard to comment on anything. I'm both happy and sad to see myself as the top voter for somewhat underrated artists like Wire and My Bloody Valentine, and it's even weirder to see Billy Joel outpace both of them. Brian Eno--who would probably be up at number 4 on my list if we did this poll today--deserves higher as well.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

It feels strange to complain about band i did not vote for, but Spoon at 440 confirm that their critical success when albums are released is never reflected in the polls or lists.
It seems that they always make good albums, but fail in doing something "more" than good. You can't dislike Spoon, but does lot of people really adore them ? (which was kind of the idea reflected in Metacritic end of decade thread)

Run DMC at 341 is a shame too (they are the worst ranked AM top 100 artist, more than 100 places above T.Rex, the 2nd one), but well, I did not vote for them either... hum...

On the other hand, even though it might have been weighted mostly by my vote, I'm glad to see Built to Spill in the top 200 !
Lots of personal favorites between 101 and 150... so close !

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

I didn't vote for Brian Eno? Oops.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

I own every Billy Joel album on vinyl that was released in that format. But, that's only because you can always find near mint condition copies for 50 cents at used stores. But, if I didn't like the songs I wouldn't even have bothered paying 6 or 7 bucks for the discography. He didn't make my list but he'd probably be in the next hundred.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

Moonbeam:

Excellent job and format.

Jackson:

Underrated by whom? Loveless is in the AM top 100. Eno and Wire are critical darlings. AM voters seem to like them as well.

To me the most underrated group of artists on this list are R&B and soul acts from the 1960s and early 1970s, especially Smokey Robinson, War, the Supremes, the Temptations, and Al Green.

To several posters, I woould say that Billy Joel is underrated by critics and hipsters alike. I am reminded of Chuck Klosterman's great essay on Joel. As he notes, many groups that he and other deem "great," are not really that exceptional, they are just really, really cool (which makes their admirers feel really cool by extension). Billy Joel is the antithesis of cool. But if you look past that, he wrote good melodies and from Turnstiles (1976) to An Innocent Man (1983) had a really nice run (those albums are full of great tracks). While he had hits after An Innocent Man, these albums were pretty pedestrian. I think even Joel would admit he was running dry.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

I would've voted for MBV but I made a personal decision to only allow bands who I've heard at least two albums by (except Television). In the end I only voted for about 15 artists, because it turns out I know shockingly little music.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

XTC and The Fall are 2 that stand out as bands I thought would be much higher. Both bands have put out many great albums, with very few poor ones. I guess I can understand The Fall, people either love or hate them. But XTC as low as that is a big surprise...

Thanks, Henrik! That's very magnanimous of you!

I know Joel's music isn't for everyone, but since it's come up, I'll make my case...
I look at a song like "Goodnight Saigon", a gut-wrenching (anti-?)war song, the frantic synths of "Pressure", or the old-time harmonizing on "The Longest Time", and I just feel he is a genius. A master of many styles, generally simple but honest lyrics and vocals, and certainly more substantive than most of what was popular in the late 70s, early 80s. And I'm pretty sure he was responsible for bringing down the Berlin Wall (just kidding).

ps. kudos Moonbeam...this has been worth the wait

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

Honorio
The solo careers of Paul Simon and (especially) Eric Clapton on the Top 100 are really surprising. I suppose that some voted thinking on their whole career.

"After Midnight"
"Lay Down Sally"
"Promises"
"Knockin' on Heaven's Door"
"Tears in Heaven"
"I Shot the Sheriff"
"Wonderful Tonight"

I think he's had a pretty good solo career, even without "Layla", or the Yardbirds, or Cream

That's a point of view, mine is that his covers of Knockin' on Heaven's Door and I Shot the Sheriff are among the most dreadful non-French pre-90s covers I have ever heard. It will be hard to find something I am more likely to turn off than I shot the Sheriff on a classic-rock radio.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

Mmm, Larry, probably the fact that half of the songs you mention are cover doesn't help that much. The first decade of Clapton career (1965-1974) was in my opinion his best (like any other artist by the way). Anyway my favorite Clapton song is Please Be With Me from 1974's "461 Ocean Boulevard" with its lazy tempo and a superb dobro part.

It might not have changed the ranking much but my biggest regret is not to have voted for the Replacements. I don't know how in the world I can not have liked Let it Be at first listen ; this album is a wonder and I now regard Unsatisfied, I Will Dare, Favorite Thing and Bastards of Young as part of the best songs ever. I guess those songs kinda reflect my current state of mind, that might be why I stick to them now more than before.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

Glad you stuck with the 'Mats, Nassim. I believe the intro to Unsatisfied may be the greatest ever.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

21. Sly and the Family Stone- Of all the bands that ever existed including the Beatles, this is the band I wish I could travel back to see live. Hopefully when Sly showed up.

30. Madonna- If you don’t like Madonna you just don’t like pop music as we know it today. It’s that simple. No big deal if you don’t, but there is nobody more important to pop than her.

39. Replacements- Did they shape my view of Minneapolis or did they just embody it? I can’t tell.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

Underrated is a relative term, and I probably misused it here. Let me rephrase: to me, MBV and Wire are two of the all-time greats, but they are ranked outside of the top 90 in this poll. Also, neither made a dent in our songs poll, and Wire has never really had a great showing in a poll here. It's not as if these artists are unknown around these parts, but I don't think anyone else appreciates them quite like I do.

It's a tragedy to see Coldplay above The National, on a side note. My comment for the National:

One of my finds of the last decade, the National have released 3 perfect albums in a row. Alligator may be my personal favourite, because it's so complete. The baritone voice of Matt Berninger is
always nice sober relief compared to say Kevin Barnes of Of Montreal, and those duelling guitars always sound so beautiful. Then came Boxer,
another more sombre masterpiece, and now High Violet, which I think
history (i.e. AM) will place below both of those.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

Great show Moonbeam. The links are working fine (Reptilia by The Strokes didn't but the rest I have tried did work.)
So many artist I wished to see way more higher. Especially Eno and Scott Walker (nj & sonofsamiam why didn't you vote).
Last time I was very disappointed of the bad rank of Animal Collective but now they are in top 100.
But I can't believe I was the only one who voted Liars one of the most important band of the last decade.
There might be a tiny shortage in the list (or we'll have the biggest surprise in history of amf history.
Pekka Streng was #22 in my list so I guess it should be #396 with Rotten Root and others.

The National might actually have risen to number 2 on my list after "High Violet." For the last 5 years or so, they really haven't had a mis-step - everything from "Sad Songs..." on is brilliant. Each of those 4 is in my top 100 albums list.

And of course, I'm glad that I'm not the only one with love for The National; placing in the Top 100 is pretty damn good for a band that gets way more acclaim here than anywhere else.

On a side note - I'm absolutely curious where Arcade Fire places. I'm guessing it's quite high (based on the preferences of this forum) and might even be higher next time (since the poll was conducted before "The Suburbs" came out).

What a ridiculously great run of artists there. I was reminded of my need to get something by The Byrds as well as another Wilco album besides YHF.

45. Byrds- In my mind they’re a singles band and I never really got into Sweetheart. But, the singles were great.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

I'd be very surprised if McCartney made the list, but he didn't even make the top 500? Come on. For someone who is considered the greatest songwriter of all time, how can his solo career be so underrated? Is it consistent? No. But, his solo career has produced more great songs than a dozen artists who made the top 100 combined.

This might be off-topic, but my grandmother has met a ridiculous amount of famous musicians. To start, she was at Woodstock. She met Bruce while he was still performing at clubs down the Jersey Shore. Then in the eighties she became good friends with Lionel Richie, partied with Quincy Jones and met Stevie Nicks and even better, MJ.

The best story she has though is meeting Stevie Wonder. As a teenager (and probably the only white girl in a sea of black kids) she got to go backstage at one of Motown's original "Motortown Revue" shows, where she met Stevie Wonder. Some twenty years later, she met him again, and the first thing he says, "I don't recall your name or when and where, but we've met before." She says, "How'd you know?" and he replies "I can tell by your smell." Turns out since he couldn't see, he identified everyone he knew by their odor.

By who ?

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

John,

What's wrong with being a singles band?

I also second John's thesis that Paul's solo career is underrated. Ram and Band on the Run are excellent records.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

What dozen of artists could that possibly be?
Not in this top 100, or top 500 for that matter.

45. Byrds- In my mind they’re a singles band and I never really got into Sweetheart. But, the singles were great.

In their best years The Byrds were as innovative as The Beatles, if not more.
They invented Folk rock-their charttopping cover of Mr. Tambourine Man introduced Dylan to the masses (before that he was only a household name in Folk circles), Eight Miles High was the first out-'n-out psychedelic song and, after recruiting Gram Parsons, they came up with the most bizarre hybrid of all: Country rock. Hippies doing redneck Country, the music of the enemy. In retrospect it proved to be a very influential move, one of the starting points of Americana, but at the time it cost them their fanbase.
The Byrds' artistic peak however, are the albums Younger Than Yesterday ('67) and The Notorious Byrd Brothers ('68). Here they perfected their psychedelic style and on Notorious are a few early Country influences, which makes up for some groovy psychedelic C&W. The hits are not necessarily the best tracks on these albums.
By the way, I can understand why you didn't get Sweetheart Of The Rodeo. It may have been the first full-on Country rock album, but certainly not the best of the genre. Try The Flying Burrito Brothers' Gilded Palace Of Sin or Gram Parsons' Grievous Angel instead.

Bob Dylan charted quite well with albums like The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, The Times They Are a-Changin' and Bringing it All Back Home in particular (especially in the UK by the way), so to state that Dylan was 'only a household name in Folk circles' before that is not very close to the truth.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

As much as I love Paul McCartney, and would love to see him make the list, I think it would be interesting to see George Harrison out-rank him (at #136), without Paul even making the top 500.

A Dylan fan, I presume?
Anyway, you're right, Dylan was not an obscure name prior to the success of The Byrds. In the early 60s the Folk scene and its followers (usually college students) may not have been mainstream, but was a force to be reckoned. Folk acts like Peter, Paul & Mary or The Kingston Trio scored bonafide hits on a regular basis. In the case of Dylan, getting to no.20 (with the Times They Are A Changing LP) on the album charts or reaching the topspot with your composition on the Billboard singles chart, with 12-year old kids mentioning your name and housewives all over the country listening to your song on primetime radio, are quite two different things.
Actually, The Byrds' version of Tambourine Man was only released in april '65, but they were working on it as early as 1964. Dylan was aware of that. Both acts were on Columbia after all, using the same recording facilities and there are photos of him and The Byrds, made during the sessions. Dylan has always denied it, but it's very well possible that The Byrds gave him a clue or two about going electric himself, heralding the most interesting phase of his career.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

Notorious Byrd Brothers is definitely their best album but it still doesn't feel like a fully realized album to me. But, obviously there is nothing wrong with being a singles band, they made my top 50.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

And the dozen artists remark is a personal opinion. But considered the greatest songwriter? I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who has that opinion.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

John,

I honestly don't think I ever heard McCartney dubbed "the" greatest songwriter ever. I know Guiness named him the most successful songwriter ever (which based on sales and chart performance is justified).

I think there is general consensus that he is ONE of the greatest songwriters ever (like top 5).

Indeed, I have always felt that McCartney gets shortchanged in songwriter comparisons with Lennon. There is a tendency to reduce songwriting to lyrics, where John holds a sizeable advantage. But McCartney wrote better melodies and was a better arranger to boot.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

I would say McCartney is definitely the best songwriter among the Beatles, even though I can't think of a single song in his solo career I love, but he wouldn't even make my top 25 songwriters in general.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

I'm not a fan of McCartney as a songwriter. I really like a few of his Beatles songs, but his whole style is too bouncy and saccharine for me. I get the impression from what I know about the Beatles that Lennon wanted to do simple emotionally direct songs and McCartney wanted to do all these kitschy ambitious experiments. He's always trying to do something 'iconic', but more often than not it ends up cheesy. (O-Bla-Di, Rocky Racoon, Band On The Run, etc). And he always seems emotionally removed from them.

Edit: I started writing this post before Moonbeam made that post. I guess McCartney got in on a small amount of really high votes.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

Paul Mccartney is far too high. Considering that we consider his best album to be 658 and his best song to be 186, it seems illogical that we'd put him at 58.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

I think we might be overrating him because he's a Beatle. We have Harrison at #136 while he has one album at #271 and one song at #362. Lennon has albums at #75, #258 and #2896 and songs at #357, #245 and #33; more deserving to be in the top 50, but deserving enough?

Then again, James Brown didn't do much better. It would be interesting to apply Henrik's artist formula to the album and songs lists and compare the results to this poll.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

Look at the distribution of votes for McCartney though. He only got 7 votes, but four of them were #11 or higher. Most of the other acts around the 50s and 60s have like 10-14 votes more evenly distributed.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

I'm a bit surprised I did not vote for Queen around 60 or 70, but well, they might have reached the top 50 then which would have been way too high... so I'm glad I didn't !

Glad to see Big Star and Nick Drake receive the support they deserve !

And on a much more important note : yippiiiiiiie, my #1 remains in the top 50 and my #3 have reached it !

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

I'm glab to see Queen in the top 60.
If I had put them higher on my lisy maybe they would have cfacked 50!

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

His solo career is a lot like the Byrds, a good borderline great album (Ram), an album everybody knows (Band on the Run) and a ton of great singles. Of all of the Beatles, his solo career best carried over the spirit of the Beatles work.

Anyway... Here's the comments I gave Moonbeam for the artists recently revealed.

3. Paul McCartney- How can the most popular songwriter ever have his solo catalog so underrated?

36. Steely Dan- If the songs weren’t good I wouldn’t care, but when you look up production in the dictionary the first two words should be Steely Dan.

23. Big Star- Same as Matthew Sweet, they just did power pop at the wrong time. Luckily for both, people still find about great records.

John
Of all of the Beatles, his solo career best carried over the spirit of the Beatles work.

That's debatable.

I would say Paul's solo work best carried over the pop craftsmanship of the Beatles, but John's solo work best carried over the emotional core.

John's solo career is rather overrated, in my opinion (especially Imagine).
Paul solo career had it highlights, but so did Georges.
If the Beatles had stayed together a little longer, All Things Must Pass would be a Beatles' album.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

31. John Lennon- Other than arguably the greatest icon music has ever known losing his life, I think the other tragedy when he was shot was that he was showing his human side, his entry into adulthood and letting go of his cynicism. We only got a glimpse of that journey and it’s something no other rock icon ever really gave us.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Results!

I'm surprised yet delighted that Television have, on the strength of one album, got this far

I Missed Out...

on this poll- will have to get in the next one. AM posters have good taste, from the looks of it.

Re: I Missed Out...

Johnny Cash should be ranked higher and I should have ranked Tom Waits higher. Still, great couple of artists. Gonna listen to some Waits now; Tom Traubert's Blues is one of the greatest songs ever written—no discussion.

True, but unfortunately the song didn't do very well on the AMF song poll.

I should have placed him some positions higher as well.

Re: I Missed Out...

I'm also quite intrigued by Tom Waits. I adore Swordfishtrombones, and that proved to be quite a revelation for me, as it would never have stood a chance to get through my annoying shortcomings not long before. Rain Dogs I enjoy OK, but not as much. But that's all I know! I'm sure there's plenty of great stuff out there of his, and I don't know where to continue.

Re: I Missed Out...

Yeah, only nicolas had that song ranked really high. If we were to do another poll it would definitely be top 100 for me; I can't believe I didn't even include it in my top 500 songs.

As for other albums, I really enjoy the stuff he did after Rain Dogs as well. Frank's Wild Years, Mule Variations and Bone Machine in particular. Of the albums before Swordfishtrombones my favorite is Small Change, partially due to Tom Traubert's Blues.

Re: I Missed Out...

The good thing is that I really like both his Asylum records and his Island records. And I am looking forward to digging further in his ANTI records as well.

My favorite other of his albums is Real Gone. Some of his 90's stuff is good like Mule Variations and Bone Machine but a little too talk-singy. Orphans is really good, but you might not want to go straight to a triple album. His earlier stuff like Closing Time and Blue Valentine is good too but more conventional. The only Waits album I've heard I don't like is Alice.

Re: I Missed Out...

Also, one very traditional album of Tom Waits is the soundtrack of the movie "One from the heart", on which Crystal Gayle sings with him in duets or solo. Excellent record! It's very romantic, and there isn't a rocker or uptempo song on it.
