Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

Welcome to the Segment 8 of the 50s & 60s acclaimed music forum poll. This month it’s the turn of 1967, a year (or I should say a summer) that ignited the golden age of pop music. Some may argue about that but (not only) in my opinion the period of 5 years between 1967 and 1971 were a period of continued discoveries, of endless changes (a thing that was hip in January may seem dated in June) and, of course, good good music. So the next three months you will deal with a difficult task: to cut into a limited Top 20 so many good albums and songs (but of course, larger lists are especially welcome!!). I’m expecting nothing but great lists this month (again).

Please submit at least 5 songs and/or albums with your personal choices, preferably but not necessarily with ranking, lists without ranking will get an average score of 10 points per song/album. The deadline is midnight on the 31st of August. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.

You may find useful to have a look at the albums and songs lists of:
- Acclaimed Music: albums and songs.
- Rate Your Music: albums, songs and, since some of the album considered compilations in Rate Your Music are eligible on this poll, the compilations.

Have a nice poll…

Bootlegs of the originial sound way better than the Robbie Robertson version, so I count it as 1967. I would count it, cause everyone and their uncle covered it.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

Honorio
First research on eligibility of your 1967 votes, see the eligibility thread for more details:
- Velvet Underground's song “I Heard Her Call My Name”: not eligible for 1967 (released in 1968), Fred’s list move one place up from #5.
- Tim Hardin’s song “If I Were a Carpenter”: not eligible for 1967 (released in 1966), Fred’s list move another place up from #16.
- Bob Dylan & The Band’s album “The Basement Tapes”: not eligible for 1967 (released in 1975).
- The Soft Machine’s song “Memories”: not eligible for 1967 (released in 1972), Charlie Driggs’ list move one place up from #3.
- Buffalo Springfield’s song “For What Its Worth”: finally eligible for 1967.
- The Temptations’ song “Reflections”: not eligible for 1967 (released in 2006), substituted in Gillingham’s list for The Supremes original version.

I somehow knew "The End" by doors would made top 20 8as no 20!.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

I intend to participate in this poll, so I picked up Safe As Milk, Da Capo, and Piper At the Gates of Dawn in addition to the classics I already have (VU & Nico, Sgt. Pepper's, The Doors, Forever Changes, Songs of Leonard Cohen, Are You Experienced, and Something Else).

Anything else I need to listen to? I was also considering the Frank Zappa and Tim Buckley albums that came out in `67.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

"The Who Sell Out" and "John Wesley Harding". "I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You" is pretty good, too.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

I'm on the side that feels "Their Satanic Majesties Request" has long been unjustly overlooked (primarily due to it's supposed similarities and inferiority to Sgt. Pepper's). I would recommend another listen for its own sake, ignoring the context in which it was originally released. There's some pretty creative & engaging stuff on that LP!

FAVOURITE COMPILATION: BOB DYLAN "Greatest Hits"

The incomplete Spotify links for albums and songs.

My favourite Spanish song of 1967: Pic-Nic's "Cállate, niña"

Amidst the psychedelia, acid-rock, blues-rock, prog-rock and other innovative styles of the convoluted late 60s many bands chose soft and optimistic sounds that at the end defined its era even better than the bolder styles I mentioned. Softly strummed acoustic guitars, whispered voices, orchestral touches and vocal harmonies characterized the sound of those soft-folk and sunshine-pop bands. And Spain got its share with the band Pic-Nic, although that band got a multi-national formation. The band got its origins in Brenner's Folk that gathered two Venezuelan brothers (Vytas and Haakon Brenner) and two excellent musicians from Barcelona: the drummer Jordi Sabatés and the guitar player Toti Soler, that after Pic-Nic's disbandment participated in other seminal bands like Om recording underground classics as Dioptria backing Pau Riba. Particularly Toti Soler developed a long a fascinating career equidistant on jazz, pop, folk and even classical (see the video for Toti that I uploaded myself on You Tube for the 1972 poll).
Jeanette Dimech was a young girl of French name born in England from an African father and a Spanish mother and raised in California that just came to live in Barcelona after her parents' divorce. Despite her mixed roots, her nomad life and her youth (she was only 15-years old then) she became well integrated in Barcelona music scene and ended as the lead singer of Brenner's Folk. When the Brenner brothers come back to Venezuela they were replaced by two new members (one of them Mexican) and the band changed its name to Pic-Nic.
Their first single was "Cállate, niña" ("Hush, Little Girl") and it was a smash hit in Spain, lasting for 12 consecutive weeks on #1 of the charts of a country where many child stars succeeded then (Marisol, Joselito, Rocío Dúrcal). A young Jeanette probably was seen as a new model of child star for the modern times, able of writing her own songs. Because, although the fingerpickin' guitar sweetly played by Toti Soler and the soft arrangements were quite remarkable, the song was completely Jeanette's creature. She wrote that song, her very first song, as a lullaby (partially based on "Hush, Little Baby") but with tremendous lyrics about a little girl who has just lose her mother. And he sang it with her childish whispered voice with that delicious Californian accent (that will never lose) and her angel face. The same weapons that, after conquering first the Spanish audience, conquered too the Latin-American audiences after her solo hit Soy rebelde ("I'm a Rebel", 1971) and finally the European audience with Por qué te vas ("Why Are You Leaving?", 1974).

CÁLLATE, NIÑA
Composers: Jeanette Dimech - Rafael Turia
Performer: PIC-NIC
First release: 1967 ("Cállate, niña" single)
Length: 3’30”

Cállate, niña, no llores más,
tú sabes que mamá debía morir.
Ya desde el cielo te cuidará.
Cállate, niña, no llores más.

Nunca sabrás cuánto sufrió,
ahora ya duerme sin fin.
Es mejor que sea así.
No llores, no llores más.

Lordy Lordy ay ay ay,
tú la puedes consolar.
Lordy Lordy ay ay ay,
tú la debes consolar.

Yo quería a tu mamá
y también a tu papá.
Rezaré solo por ti.
Calla, niña, no llores más.

Lordy Lordy ay ay ay,
tú la puedes consolar.
Lordy Lordy ay ay ay,
tú la debes consolar.

Cállate, niña, no llores más,
tú sabes que mamá debía morir.
Ya desde el cielo te cuidará.
Cállate, niña, no llores más.

Lordy Lordy ay ay ay,
tú la puedes consolar.
Lordy Lordy ay ay ay,
tú la debes consolar.

Lordy Lordy ay ay ay,
tú la puedes consolar.
Lordy Lordy ay ay ay…

HUSH, LITTLE GIRL

Hush, little girl, don't you cry,
you know your mummy was born to die.
She will take care of you from heaven.
Hush, little girl, don't you cry.

You'll never know about her suffering,
now she sleeps endlessly.
It's better like that.
Don't you cry, don't you cry no more.

Lordy Lordy ay ay ay,
you can comfort her.
Lordy Lordy ay ay ay,
you must comfort her.

I loved your mummy,
and your daddy too.
I'll pray for only you.
Hush, little girl, don't you cry.

Lordy Lordy ay ay ay,
you can comfort her.
Lordy Lordy ay ay ay,
you must comfort her.

Hush, little girl, don't you cry,
you know your mummy was born to die.
She will take care of you from heaven.
Hush, little girl, don't you cry.

Lordy Lordy ay ay ay,
you can comfort her.
Lordy Lordy ay ay ay,
you must comfort her.

Lordy Lordy ay ay ay,
you can comfort her.
Lordy Lordy ay ay ay…

A reminder before I post my own list: "Sunday Morning" was released as a single in 1966, so it was eligible LAST month - and in fact made the cut for the final poll. (I came here to check on WL/WH, just to make sure it's up next month rather than now. It was hard enough making my '67 album and song lists to begin with.)

With all respect Chris, but I don't see any Beatles' shortage. In almost all of the lists they are represented with at least one or two entries in the top 10. There are other artists which are more underrated, I would say.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

Wow, great lists!
Some comments on eligibility:
- Moonbeam and Jackson, both “Sunday Morning” and “Hey Joe” were first released as singles in 1966 and both are in fact elected on the Top 10 songs from and going to the next round (as Harold Wexler pointed too). I move your lists one place up. In any case many many thanks Moonbeam and Jackson for coming here!!
- Of course all the songs from “Songs of Leonard Cohen” were eligible although some of them were released as singles in 1968 and appear on the AM lits as 1968’s. Hope that nobody is not voting for the wonderful “Suzanne” for instance for that reason.

Haha, well, I probably should have only typed the first half of that sentence. Yes, the Beatles are doing quite well in this poll, but they aren't dominating like I thought they would. While it is a little disappointing that poll isn't turning out exactly like I thought it would, it is more exciting will discover some new music out of participating in this poll. (I don't know why I thought it would turn exactly how I wanted it to. I've done enough polls that I should know that will never happen)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

So, I noticed that "Care of Cell 44" is listed as a 1967 single on RYM ... a couple (though not many) have voted for it here. I'm gonna vote for it now, though I would be unsurprised if it gets much more love next month when we vote on '68. Has this been discussed yet and I missed it?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

Yes, it was released as a single on 1967 so I suppose this fact it's going to divide the votes and reduce its chances to get in. We should consider it as 1967 and keep the votes of 1968 for other gems from the same album like "Time of the Season" or "Hung Up to a Dream". Anyway it's still 24 hours for the deadline, if someone wants to change his vote to include "Care of Cell 44" there's no problem for me.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

Based on this thread I'm getting The Parable of Arable Land. The song "Hurricane Fighter Plane" is really cool and very unique.

Also, I wonder how far a few high votes can get "You Set the Scene." I doubt it will make T15, but it should over "Alone Again Or."

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

Final comments on eligibility affecting Georgie’s list:
- It seems that Eternity’s Children first LP (produced by the then ubiquitous Curt Boettcher) was released in mid 1968 by Tower label, check here. You can vote for them next year.
- I’m not sure about the release date of the bootleg album from Iron Butterfly. RYM list it as from 1970 and probably they’re true (in 1967 Iron Butterfly haven’t even released their debut album) but since I got no other information I’m going to include it.
- As you know, The Beach Boys’ album “SMiLE” remains unreleased, I’m going to assign your points to “Smiley Smile”, if you prefer to move up a position on your list please tell me.

Just a few hours for the deadline. Some people voted for 1966 but (still) not for 1967: EMW, SR, Zorg, Beans, Superfurry, Nassim and Alex D. C’mon, you still got (little) time. Moreover we have a tie for #15 of albums and three songs almost tied for #10 of songs. C’mon, place your votes, we’re talking about 1967…

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

It will be very interesting to which artists qualify multiple songs from this year. The Velvet Underground seem like a guarantee with "Heroin" and "Venus in Furs," but "I'm Waiting for the Man" is popular too. The Beatles will surely have at least two or three songs. Hendrix might, but "Purple Haze" seems to be getting most of the votes here. Love will definitely qualify "Alone Again Or," and the recent votes for "You Set the Scene" probably put it over the edge. What a ridiculously good and competitive year.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

Sorry, I forget, but are there 10 or 15 spots for songs? 10 would undoubtedly knock out some real monster songs. I can't imagine A Day in the Life/Strawberry Fields/Walrus to not qualify, surely Heroin and Venus in Furs, surely Waterloo Sunset, surely Alone Again Or, surely Purple Haze, and that's already 8 spots gone...thank god Dylan didn't release a good album in 1967!

Edit: Honorio, please ignore my All Along the watchtower vote for Hendrix, of course it was released in 1968...

Taking out Smiley Smile, which is a joke compared to the unreleased Smile. I'm tired of certain albums not having actual release dates. When was Sagittarius' Present Tense released? 1967, early or late '68? I would like to know at least the month. Check out answers.com (source for Eternity's Children), and the Present Tense release date says 1967 then the first sentence says 1968. Also, if Eternity's Children was released mid-68 and used a demo that was later perfected on Present Tense, how can a late 68 release be seen as being released in 1967 that often. My guess woul be early 1968, but I really can't tell because of all the phony info. I was going to ask about Present Tense with my song votes even before looking at the link.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

Let’s go with the results, first the best albums of 1967. The numbers of voters remained the same as 1966 (22 voters) but let me welcome the new voters (Henry, Gillingham, Moonbeam, Jackson and the return of Listyguy) that compensated the absence of EMW, SR, Zorg (in the album list), Superfurry and Alex D.
There was an obvious winner, "The Velvet Underground & Nico", that almost doubled the points of "Sgt. Pepper’s". Two bands, The Beatles and The Jimi Hendrix Experience put two albums in the Top 15 (The Doors lost this double condition at the very last moment). It’s remarkable also the high position of “Forever Changes” that jumped to the #2 from the #4 the last day of voting. Two classic psychedelic albums, one American and one British, found their way to the last two positions of the Top 15 during the last day too, while during the whole month were (surprisingly) out of it. Well, the list:

1. The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico
2. Love - Forever Changes
3. The Doors - The Doors
4. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced
5. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
6. Leonard Cohen - Songs of Leonard Cohen
7. The Who - The Who Sell Out
8. The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour
9. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis: Bold as Love
10. The Kinks - Something Else by The Kinks
11. Bob Dylan - John Wesley Harding
12. Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You
13. Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - Safe as Milk
14. Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
15. Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow

Many thanks everyone for participating.
Soon the songs.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

Interesting to see the fall of Disraeli Gears

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

Yes, "Disraeli Gears" began on high positions but ended out of the Top 15. Similar fate for "Strange Days" and (sadly) "Buffalo Springfield Again". Another one of my favourites ("Younger Than Yesterday") never got chances to enter the Top 15 but finally ended quite near. If someone is interested in the next 15 positions:

16. Buffalo Springfield - Buffalo Springfield Again
17. The Byrds - Younger Than Yesterday
18. The Doors - Strange Days
19. Cream - Disraeli Gears
20. Scott Walker - Scott
21. Nico - Chelsea Girls
22. Tim Buckley - Goodbye and Hello
23. Miles Davis Quintet - Miles Smiles
24. The Rolling Stones - Between the Buttons
25. Laura Nyro - More Than a New Discovery
26. Moby Grape - Moby Grape
27. Ewa Demarczyk - Ewa Demarczyk śpiewa piosenki Zygmunta Koniecznego
28. The Red Crayola - The Parable of the Arable Land
29. The Free Design - Kites Are Fun
30. The Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed

Nothing but great albums here

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

I wonder why nobody but me voted for Czeslaw Niemens thrilling ballad "Dziwny Jest Ten Swiat" (my #2). Do I excessivly overrate this anthem of the polish if not eastern European pop underground in the late sixties?

I did vote n the albums list, Honorio! Was it not counted? Go Are You Experienced!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1967

Ouch, so sorry, SR, I committed an absurd mistake, I simply forgot to include your list, I don’t know why. The inclusion of your votes changes the position of some albums but none of them fall out of the Top 15. The new list:
1. The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico
2. Love - Forever Changes
3. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced
4. The Doors - The Doors
5. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
6. Leonard Cohen - Songs of Leonard Cohen
7. The Who - The Who Sell Out
8. The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour
9. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis: Bold as Love
10. The Kinks - Something Else by The Kinks
11. Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You
12. Bob Dylan - John Wesley Harding
13. Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow
14. Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
15. Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - Safe as Milk

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1967

Time for the best songs of 1967 as voted by our 23 voters. A total of 164 songs were voted this time, achieving a new record on the 50s-60s poll.
Unlike the albums lists, in the songs section The Beatles won The Velvet Underground, with two songs each but the Beatles ending on positions 1 and 3. But the Velvets almost got three songs on the Top 10 (“I’m Waiting for the Man” stayed outside the gates for only 1 point of difference with “Alone Again Or”). The final Top 10:

1. The Beatles - A Day in the Life
2. The Kinks - Waterloo Sunset
3. The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever
4. The Velvet Underground & Nico - Heroin
5. Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade of Pale
6. The Doors - Light My Fire
7. The Velvet Underground & Nico - Venus in Furs
8. Aretha Franklin - Respect
9. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Purple Haze
10. Love - Alone Again Or

So it seems that the people on the Forum like our Velvets and surely can appreciate the screeching violas (only joking, Henry) but simultaneously we’re able to recognize the crowning achievements of British psychedelic pop of Beatles, Kinks, Procol Harum and the Jimi Hendrix Experience (yes, they were half British). Except the Stones, their psychedelic pop period was severely punished by the AMers. I can’t resist posting the next 25 positions:

11. The Velvet Underground & Nico - I’m Waiting for the Man
12. The Beatles - Penny Lane
13. Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl
14. The Who - I Can See for Miles
15. The Turtles - Happy Together
16. Love - You Set the Scene
17. The Beatles - I Am the Walrus
18. Louis Armstrong - What a Wonderful World
19. Jefferson Airplane - Somebody to Love
20. Love - The Red Telephone
21. Leonard Cohen - Suzanne
22. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Little Wing
23. Buffalo Springfield - For What It’s Worth
24. Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - Ain’t No Mountain High Enough
25. The Doors - The End
26. Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit
27. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Manic Depression
28. Sam and Dave - Soul Man
29. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - The Tears of a Clown
30. The Doors - The Crystal Ship
31. Aretha Franklin - Chain of Fools
32. Leonard Cohen - So Long, Marianne
33. The Moody Blues - Nights in White Satin
34. Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower
35. The Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday

And that’s all, the Excel file, many thanks for your votes and see you next year, you know, in 1968.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1967

Wow, I can't complain, that's an excellent top 10. Except I Am The Walrus should be creeping in there somewhere though what it takes out I can't answer...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1967

That's an awesome list. Looks like "You Set the Scene" didn't perform quite as well as I expected it to. "A Whiter Shade of Pale" has to be the biggest surprise, passing finishing ahead of "Light My Fire," "Respect," and "Purple Haze."

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

Yes, Jackson, “A Whiter Shade of Pale” performed better that everyone could expect. It was tied with “Light My Fire” but finished ahead because it was voted by more people (14 instead 11 for The Doors). About “You Set the Scene” it ended quite high despite being voted by only 5 people but in the high positions of their lists (including a #1 vote from sonofsamiam). Pink Floyd’s “See Emily Play” was the opposite case, it was voted by 5 people but in the lower positions, ending merely at #57.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1967

Charlie Driggs
I wonder why nobody but me voted for Czeslaw Niemens thrilling ballad "Dziwny Jest Ten Swiat" (my #2). Do I excessivly overrate this anthem of the polish if not eastern European pop underground in the late sixties?

I think this song is overrated. There are better polish songs in my opinion.
