Ugh. Does one of these two really have to go to the round of 256? I guess I vote Weezer just on the merit of Buddy Holly and Pinkerton.

Van Halen - Don't get me wrong... I enjoyed what the Pointer Sisters brought to the table. Solid hit makers they were. And Van Halen is a problematic hit or miss group. But goddamn if "Jump," "Hot for Teacher," and "Panama" isn't the perfect hard pop-rock 1-2-3 combination.

Three Dog Night - I kinda liked that Live song the first time, and then they kept releasing the same song over and over (or so it felt). Gimme the joyful Three Dog Night instead.

Blood, Sweat & Tears - I'll say this for Manfred Mann, they have excellent taste in cover song choices. As for BST, I realize I'm supposed to like their original Al Kooper led version more, but I actually am a sucker for their big self-titled hit album.

The Cars - Really like The Specials' first album, probably more than any individual Cars album. But the cumulative hits of the Cars wins out. I tried not to let my feeling that "Ghost Town" is one of the most overrated songs ever affect my decision.

Justin Timberlake - I kinda get why the Everlys are well-regarded, But their harmonies-in-thirds thing lays flat for me. Timberlake has been a super-surprise since his solo debut. Dynamic, not afraid to look ridiculous (and succeeds in looking ridiculous less often than one might have predicted), and as fine a conduit for Timbaland's production craziness as Aaliyah had been.

Patti Smith - Two dynamic presences. I feel bad because my knowledge of Shakur is limited, but I will go with Smith, whose Horses surprised me by living up to its hype. I don't usually go in for heavily poetic lyrics, and SMith often fails to sell it, but she does often enough.

Pretenders - Another vore I feel bad about. King is bad motherf*&^er. But so is Hynde. Can't get enough of her delivery on "Talk of the Town" an "Middle of the Road"

Weezer - One of the worst recent purchases I made was Weezer's Red Album. If that was their only output, though, they still would be miles ahead of Buffet, who is one of the unholy members of Schwah's official "Worst Three Artists of All Time." (Fact is, I adore the Blue Album and Pinkerton so I'm happy to vote for Weezer... but that Red Album was prety bad.)

Favorite this round - On the strength of their first two albums, Weezer, but their stock as been dropping.
