Artist of the Week: Week 9

Welcome to artist of the week. You can find the full set of rules here, but a basic overveiw is to give me a list of your favorite songs from this week's chosen artist. Please ask all questions about artist of the week on the rules forum. This forum is strictly for lists.

This week, instead of doing a specific artist, I decided to do a specific theme that has to do with an upcoming event (where I live, anyway)

This Week's theme is Summer Songs. Voting Will Close Next Sunday (June 13) at 12:00.

All Night Long - Lionel Ritchie

Such a nice song. Used to love it during my childhood!

Re: Artist of the Week: Week 9

Not all of these tracks pertain to summer itself but the summery vibe is overwhelming with most of them.

Pavement - Summer Babe [Winter Version]
Pavement - Gold Soundz (I know Summer Babe's the obvious choice but the video for GS so perfectly encapsulates the feel of summer fun and that image is locked in my head now)
Lemon Jelly - Nice Weather for Ducks
Mungo Jerry - In The Summertime
OutKast - Ghettomusick
The Isley Brothers - Summer Breeze
The Go! Team - Bottle Rocket (well, all of Thunder Lightning Strike really but this is a prime cut)
Yeasayer - O.N.E.
Dario G - Sunchyme
The Strokes - Someday
Vampire Weekend - Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa
The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
Les Rythmes Digitales - (Hey You) What's That Sound?
Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up
Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al
Sean Paul - Like Glue
The Fresh Prince & Jazzy Jeff - Summertime
M.I.A. - Jimmy
Lonyo - Summer Of Love
Junior Senior - Move Your Feet

Re: Artist of the Week: Week 9

Funny you should ask! Just made Summer 2010 Happy Mix CDs for a couple of girls I like. Here's what was on them:

Troubled Times - Fountains of Wayne (FOW are always good for a summery pick me up)
These are the Days (of the endless summer) Van Morrison
Lived In Bars - Cat Power
Up the Road - Ron Sexsmith
Smile - Weezer (Whole Green album is summery)
Buggin' - Flaming Lips
And The Healing Has Begun - Van Morrison "I want you to put on that pretty summer dress; you can wear your easter bonnet and all the res'; and I wanna make love to you yes, yes yes." Always reminds me of a cleaned up, awesome, rap lyric.
Lorelei - Cocteau Twins
Come Together - Primal Scream
Big Time Sensuality - Bjork
Karmacoma - Massive Attack
Sunshowers - MIA
Ladyflash - The Go! Team

Re: Artist of the Week: Week 9

Surprised no ones picked Since I Left You. Just sounds like pure summer to me.

Re: Artist of the Week: Week 9

@ Chris and Listyguy

Have you guys even listened to Pet Sounds? Definitely not about summer. The Beach Boys were also responsible for devastatingly sad songs like "Til I Die" and "Surf's Up." Between about 1965 and 1973, most of the group's output strayed far from the topic of summer.

Have you guys even listened to Pet Sounds?
...sad songs like "Surf's Up."

I have listened to Pet Sounds and I think some of the songs can be associated with summer. I can expand on this if you'd like.

I listened to Surf's Up for the Best Songs of the 70's poll (it wasn't that good imo). You're right it doesn't fit the theme. It's not on my computer so it's not in my regular rotation of Beach Boys songs. I guess I didn't have this song in mind when I posted.

By the way I didn't mean to insult either of you. I am just tired of the Beach Boys being associated with a particular sound when I believe the band was up to something a lot greater. Of course they were a significant summer band in addition to a creator of more emotional songs.

No insult taken. On the other hand, I don't see anything off track about considering a "surf" song as associated with Summer.

I should have also included the following song on my list:

The Boys Are Back In Town - Thin Lizzy

Re: Artist of the Week: Week 9

I'm tacking on to my list also:
Hot fun in the summertime, Sly and the Family Stone
Summertime Blues, Eddie Cochran
The Boys are Back in town, Thin Lizzy

Re: Artist of the Week: Week 9

This week's poll is now over.
