Go to the NEW FORUM
Welcome to the Book 6 of the 50s & 60s acclaimed music forum poll. This month it’s the turn of the year 1965. So this time we are going to take the classic approach of our decade polls with o year per month. But what a year! It was the beginning of the golden period for pop music that, while exploding simultaneously in different and exciting new directions, rendered an unbeatable harvest of acclaimed music and songs. I only need to say that the best song ever (and my all time favourite!) was released in 1965. And the number 2 too!!
Please submit at least 5 songs and/or albums, preferably but not necessarily with ranking, lists without ranking will get an average score of 10 points per song/album. The deadline is midnight on the 30th of June. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.
You may find useful to have a look at the albums and songs lists of:
- Acclaimed Music: albums and songs.
- Rate Your Music: albums, songs and, since some of the album considered compilations in Rate Your Music are eligible on this poll, the compilations.
Have a nice poll…

Slick, was that slicknation list based on your personal preference?
Slick, I don't think your Slicknation lists should be counted in the poll totals, as this is about forumers' taste. But it would be great if you posted your personal lists too.

Mmm, Slick, you should have specified that those were not your personal lists, and you know it. No problem with your 1962-1965 lists since you corrected it (and many thanks for that). But… what should I do now with your 1959 to 1961 lists? If I simply remove it, the changes affect the Top 10 that I’ve already posted as definitive.
Wouldn’t you mind to send your 1959-1961 personal lists and I’ll think about the correct thing to do? If not I’ll probably keep the actual Top 10s for that period even if some of the votes are influenced by record sales (which it was not the point at all of any of our polls).
Sorry if I seem angry but from now on I’ll specify in the introduction of the monthly polls that this is only about our personal tastes.
OK, Slick, many thanks and sorry for the tone of my previous reply...
It's not a big deal. I was the one who took the easy way out and used my research instead of my own.

The Sonics - Psycho is freaking awesome.
But, the full album's not on Rhapsody.
Harold! Burn us all copies!
By honesty, I'm sure of me only for the first place.

FAVOURITE COMPILATION: THE IMPRESSIONS "The Impressions' Greatest Hits"
The Spotify links for albums and songs, this time incomplete too with no Beatles and no Dylan.
The "peripheral" countries music scenes were almost completely swept away during the mid sixties by a furious storm called The Beatles. Every country (at least the European ones) looked desperately for their own Beatles, being the Italian Beatles (The Rokes), the Swedish Beatles (Tages) or whatever-country Beatles. So, well, many candidates opted for the title of the Spanish Beatles but critics and audience gave at the time that crown (deservedly) to Los Brincos (The Jumps). Oddly Spain even reproduced the confrontation Beatles versus Rolling Stones in two different fronts: Los Mustang vs. Los Sirex in Barcelona and Los Brincos vs. Los Bravos in Madrid. Finally Los Bravos were going to win that particular Madrid battle the next year getting to the number one of UK charts with their smash hit Black Is Black, a surprising international recognition that was always denied to Los Brincos (well, in fact to every Spanish pop star that came after them).
Because they were the real pioneers, they participated previously in some groundbreaking bands, Fernando Arbex was the drummer of the first Spanish rock band, Los Estudiantes, formed in 1957. And Juan Pardo and Junior played with Los Pekenikes, an instrumental band MGs or Shadows-style that didn’t forget its Spanish roots. With the addition of bass player Manolo González they gathered round their love for the recent sounds that came from Liverpool. But they were always aware of the need of differential aspects, so they played dressed with old-fashioned Spanish capes and many of their songs featured typical Spanish touches, as showcased in their first single from 1964, Flamenco.
Their popularity in Spain was immediate, and after a successful first album released in 1964, "Los Brincos”, they went to Italy to record the follow-up in better technical conditions. As advance of the second album, called also "Los Brincos” and released in 1966, an EP with "Borracho" ("Drunk") as A-side achieved the second number one for the boys. On the B-side of this EP there was my favourite song by Los Brincos, "Tú me dijiste adiós" ("You Said Goodbye to Me") with vocal and guitar arrangements with an obvious debt to the Fab Four but with an undeniable charm. That song was released as A-side at the end of the year achieving also the number one, so it did the next singles "Mejor" ("Better")and "Un sorbito de champagne" ("A Sip of Champagne") and the second album. But these five consecutive number ones were not the only connection with The Beatles, the differences between the two main creative forces inside the band, Juan Pardo-McCartney and Fernando Arbex-Lennon, split the band in two just at the top of its game. Juan y Junior got popular acclaim, releasing successful singles and an only album in 1969, while Fernando Arbex reformed Los Brincos releasing two ambitious albums influenced by psychedelia and prog-rock, "Contrabando" ("Contraband", 1967) and "Mundo, demonio y carne" ("World Devil Body", 1970), after disbanding the band after going up in critical acclaim and down in audience support.
TÚ ME DIJISTE ADIÓS
Composers: F. Arbex/M. Callejo/M. González/A. Morales/J. Pardo
Performer: LOS BRINCOS
First release: 1965 ("Borracho" 7" EP)
Length: 2’52”
Tú me dijiste adiós,
no sé por qué razón,
no sé,
no sé,
no sé.
Qué culpa tuve yo,
jugaste con mi amor,
por qué,
por qué,
por qué.
Pero no importa, te perdono,
yo ya olvidé lo que pasó.
Sabes que sigo enamorado
y solo pienso en nuestro amor.
No mires hacia atrás,
ya sé que volverás
a mí,
ya sé,
ya sé.
Pero no importa, te perdono,
yo ya olvidé lo que pasó.
Sabes que sigo enamorado
y solo pienso en nuestro amor.
No mires hacia atrás,
ya sé que volverás
a mí,
ya sé,
ya sé.
A mí,
ya sé,
ya sé.
YOU SAID GOODBYE TO ME
You said goodbye to me,
I don't know the reason why,
I don't know,
I don't know,
I don't know.
Which fault have I,
you played with my love,
oh why?
Oh why?
Oh why?
But it doesn't matter, I forgive you,
I forgotten what it happened.
You know I'm still in love with you,
I'm always thinking of our love.
Don't look back,
I know you'll come back
to me,
I know,
I know.
But it doesn't matter, I forgive you,
I forgotten what it happened.
You know I'm still in love with you,
I'm always thinking of our love.
Don't look back,
I know you'll come back
to me,
I know,
I know.
To me,
I know,
I know.

I haven't listened to so many "new" albums from 1965 this month and I decided to keep the list short. Strangely I find that 1964 was a better year...
Nevertheless, the songs list is all killer and Jackson C. Frank is a wonderful discovery of the month for me! "I Want to Be Alone (Dialogue)" stepped right into my group of favorite sad songs, together with Brian Eno's "By This River" and Sufjan Stevens' "John Wayne Gacy Jr" to name a couple.

You're absolutely right, it's 1971. No idea why I had it listed as 1965. The only thing I can think of is that the event that inspired the song happened in 1965.
Honorio, please add James Brown's "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" as my #20.
Now it’s time for the best albums of 1965, 15 albums this time (I remind you that it will be like that from 1965 to 1969). We got a new increase of participation this month, from 14 to 19 voters with the usual level of excellence. I’m delighted to see more and more regulars of other polls coming to this one. Many many thanks to BillAdama, Zorg, Fred, Sven, Frank, Midaso and to the prodigal sons Alex D and Listyguy.
We’ve missed this time John and Chris (hey, John, what happened? the Fab Four needed you, they were singing Help! just for you).
The list:
1. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
2. The Beatles - Rubber Soul
3. Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home
4. John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
5. Otis Redding - Otis Blue / Otis Redding Sings Soul
6. The Beatles - Help!
7. The Who - My Generation
8. The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man
9. The Beach Boys - Today!
10. The Sonics - Here Are the Sonics!!!
11. The Rolling Stones - Out of Our Heads
12. Nina Simone - Pastel Blues
13. Jacques Brel - Ces gens-là
14. The Horace Silver Quintet - Song for My Father
15. Jackson C. Frank - Jackson C. Frank
It’s a pleasure to have the final round two albums that I've never listened before the poll and that now are real favourites, "Pastel Blues" and "Jackson C. Frank" (I didn't even knew about the existence of the latter).
As Henrik would’ve said, another great month of music discoveries. I could even add: God bless AM Forum.
Wow, this deadline really sneaked up on me. I hope it's not too late to submit a songs list. I probably could have done better with more time.

4. Beatles - Yesterday

Mmm, sorry, Chris, just upload the Excel file on box.net and I got no time right now to do the recalculations, gotta go to work. Next month...
And now the best songs of 1965 with an easy winner, Mr. Robert Zimmerman. And not only for the absolute record of points (so far) for his “Like a Rolling Stone” (683 points, almost the triple of “Satisfaction”, the second qualified). Not only for putting 4 songs on the Top 10, not even for putting 3 another songs on the positions 11 to 15. In my opinion 1965 was Dylan’s year because any other song on the Top 15 was influenced by Dylan to some extent: from the direct inspiration (acknowledged by the writers) of “A Change Is Gonna Come” or “Norwegian Wood” to the generational hymns “My Generation” or “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” that probably couldn’t have existed without Dylan. There’s even a cover of Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man” by The Byrds on #14 (by the way, it was beaten by the own Dylan version that ended at #11). Well, now with no further ado, the list:
1. Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone
2. The Rolling Stones - (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction
3. Sam Cooke - A Change Is Gonna Come
4. Bob Dylan - Desolation Row
5. The Who - My Generation
6. The Mama’s & the Papa’s - California Dreamin’
7. The Miracles - The Tracks of My Tears
8. Bob Dylan - Ballad of a Thin Man
9. Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues
10. The Beatles - Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
The Excel file.
And that’s all, many thanks everyone. See you in 1966.

So, Chris, finally Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man” and Beatles’ “In My Life” instead of “Ballad of a Thin Man” and “Norwegian Wood”? I’m not sure if we win with these changes (but it’s only my personal opinion, please please don’t get angry). Anyway I’m willing to modify the list including your votes if someone else agrees with that. Please let me know your opinion. Henrik? Anyone?
I'll withhold my opinion on this (my #1 would get knocked out in the updated version, but I love all 4 songs involved anyway).
However, we should use this as an opportunity to lay down a definitive rule for submitting after the last day of the month... for example, you can get a 48 hour extension only if you voted the previous month and (more importantly) have notified the forum prior to the deadline that your vote will be delayed.
Of course, maybe such circumstances have already been accounted for and I've missed it.
I can't help but think that Ballad of a Thin Man and Norwegian Wood are far greater songs than the other two, and I would much rather have them included. Of course, I forgot to submit a list, so shame on me.
I really don't want to decide this, but maybe it will become obvious to someone after reading these pros and cons:
Reason to include Chris' list:
It was posted after deadline, but it was posted before the combined top 10 songs was presented in the forum. Late lists like this have been accepted before.
Reason not to include Chris' list:
It was posted after deadline and the combined top 15 albums, and Honorio originally decided to post the combined top 10 songs without including it.
OK then, it’s understood, many thanks.
So sorry, Chris, I’ll try to explain my unkind reaction. Last Thursday night I did the double checking, wrote the comments and went to sleep thinking of posting the results in the morning before going to work and to a reunion in Pamplona (4-5 hours by car from my home) for three days without Internet connection. So the next morning when I was going to post the results I saw the new list (posted some hours before) with no time enough to recalculate till Sunday (three days later) and my first reaction was not to include it. But anyway it’s not the first list included after the deadline so this is the final list of the best songs of 1965:
1. Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone
2. The Rolling Stones - (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction
3. Sam Cooke - A Change Is Gonna Come
4. Bob Dylan - Desolation Row
5. The Who - My Generation
6. The Mama’s & the Papa’s - California Dreamin’
7. The Miracles - The Tracks of My Tears
8. Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues
9. The Beatles - In My Life
10. Bob Dylan - Mr. Tambourine Man
Missed this one, but here's what I got...
1. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
2. Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home
3. BB King - Live At The Regal
4. The Beatles - Rubber Soul
5. Otis Redding - Otis Blue
6. John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
7. The Who - My Generation
8. Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage
9. The Byrds - Mr Tambourine Man
10. The Beatles - Help!
I agree with including Chris's list, but I'm sad that two of my absolute favorites were knocked out.
