Re: ULTIMATE Music Tournament:Bracket #5

1. Van Halen (nope, no hometown discount this time)
8. The Pointer Sisters
12. Ash (this might be today’s easiest pick…I love Ash, I detest Live)
13. Cold War Kids
3. Manfred Mann
11. Blood, Sweat & Tears
10. The Specials
2. The Cars

MOST UNDERRATED
The Specials (UMT 625, AM 108). They’re the only one that really stands out today.

MOST OVERRATED
Manfred Mann (UMT 144, AM 2111); Jimmy Eat World (UMT 369, AM n/a); Three Dog Night (UMT 241, AM 1877).

SORT OF CLOSE
Geto Boys (UMT 1009, AM 918).

(I should note that these are just for my own entertainment. I don’t base my vote on them or anything, as my choice of Manfred should indicate. And I’m not trying to denigrate Slick’s rankings; it’s his show, after all. For those interested, yes, Coltrane’s #12 seed yesterday was by far the biggest underrating to date.)

Re: ULTIMATE Music Tournament:Bracket #5

#1 VAN HALEN

Very difficult decision. On the one hand, I have a band that I know a lot of their work, and find it to be a very mixed bag (VH). On the other hand I have a group where I only know a few songs, and enjoy them quite a bit (GB). After flip-flopping a few times I will go with the former (even though they are likely to win, particularly on the other forums where this game is being posted, and I thought a Geto Boys vote might make it a little more interesting). In the end, my love for the big hits off of 1984 won out.

#8 (497) THE POINTER SISTERS vs. #9 (528) THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS

I only just heard some of their interesting 70's stuff. And they were monster hit makers in the 80's, which is impressive for a relatively anonymous seeming group. I have a fondness for "Automatic" in particular.

#12 ASH

I don't dislike Live as much as some people, although they can usually only be taken in small doses. But I love Ash. Both 1977 and Free All Angels are great, tuneful rock albums.

#4 THREE DOG NIGHT

Another tough call. I kind of liked Cold War Kids' debut. But their singers voice has a little too much vibrato for my taste... takes away from the recordings. Three Dog Night's hits are a mixed bag, but I can't help but remember how much I liked Joy to the World as a kid.

#3 MANFRED MANN

Unimpressive match-up. Manfred Mann gets the vote largely because fo Stripes, which isn't much of a reason to vote for a band but it's all I've got.

#11 BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS

"The Middle" wasn't so bad. But I quite liked BS&T's first two albums, which my father played a lot in my youth. I still pull them out ocassionally.

#10 THE SPECIALS

Sorry Flo and Eddie. I still love you guys for your performance of the theme to "It's Garry Shandling's Show." Made me think about voting for you for a bit, particulalry beacuse "Ghost Town" is one of the most overrated songs in general and on this forum. But I do like the Special's debut album, so I'm giving them the win.

#2 THE CARS

I'm developing a love/hate relationship with this band. I hear them for the first time in a while and think, "God, they were good, why don't I listen to them more?" Then I do and tire of them quickly. But they wrote some perfect radios singles.
