How about a top twenty song poll limited to the countries in the different groups of the forthcoming soccer world cup, one poll for each group. You have to vote at least one song for each country. my pologies... this thread has to be bumped repeatedly..
Charlie, a few days ago I started to develop this list, but I was finishing the list of 1956-1958 and then I went on holidays.
The criterion is a song by artist, chronologically. (I'm ashamed to admit it, but I hardly know Spanish American artists).
Almost all of these songs can be heard on this list of Spotify, except those with a link to youtube.

George Brassens: La mauvaise reputation - 1954

I will play when i find the time
great idea !!
Exciting lists, so far. Imo, a real poll with results makes no sense here. For me, it's fun enough to explore unknown territory; search, find and recommend (and get recommended) good songs from countries which are usually not in the focus even of this forum's pop aficionados. Next group is Argentina, Nigeria, South Korea and Greece.
Yes, probably there's no neeed to compile votes, I agree. Hold this second group for a week, tomorrow I go on holidays to Lisboa for some days. I got some beloved songs on this group B when I come back(though I admit not knowing any song from North Korea).
Group B is with South Korea, a bit easier. Some North Korean songs for download you find here (Publikationen > Musik). A few are not bad at all, despite titles like "The Red Flowers of Revolution Are Coming into Bloom" or "We Will Always Look Up To The Central Committee Of The Party".
well, this has serge in it, so i guess it could count as french...but it's really sung in the universal language of constipation
enjoy!
Group B: Nigeria shouldn't be a problem. Fela Kuti is a key figure in rock music, and there are a lot of compilations with afrobeat and highlife stuff from the sixties to the eighties. New downloadable songs from Argentina, South Korea, Greece and many other "exotic" countries participating in the world cup, you'll find in the monthly column MIA - The Best Music From Around The World of (a.o.) the blog Swedesplease. From South Korea, I recommend the psych rock of the seventies band San Ul Lim (Myspace).
Meanwhile Panini started to sell the trading cards for the world cup. So let's go on collecting our favourite songs from the patricipating countries (even if I'm the only one who will). Group B:
1 : Ofege : Evil Child : Nigeria : 1974
2 : Ofege : Gbe Mi Lo : Nigeria : 1973
3 : San Ul Lim : My Soul Lies On Silk : South Korea : 1978
4 : Fela Kuti : Shenshema : Nigeria : 1972
5 : San Ul Lim : A Flower Has Bloomed In The Fog : South Korea : 1978
6 : Fela Kuti : Water No Get Enemy : Nigeria : 1975
7 : Almendra : Obertura : Argentina : 1970
8 : Sumo : La Rubia Tarada : Argentina : 1985
9 : Le Microkosmos : Es Un Hermoso Verano Lunar : Argentina : 2009
10 : Celestine Ukwu & His Philosophers National : Okwukwe Na Nchekwube : Nigeria : 1974
11 : Miguel Abuelo : El Muelle : Argentina : 1975
12 : Aphrodite's Child : Air : Greece : 1970
13 : Bajo fondo tango club : Electro Tango : Argentina : 2003
14 : Los Gatos : La Balsa : Argentina : 1967

19 : Spyweirdos, John Morjopoulos And Floros Floridis : Epistrophy : Greece : 2008
20 : Miguel Abuelo : El Largo Dia De Vivir : Argentina : 1975
So let’s go with the group B. I’m going to do the same I did on Group A, 10 songs with 4, 3, 2 and 1 song from the different countries. In chronological order:
ARGENTINA: (I’ve already posted some of my favourite songs from Argentina in a previous thread, the only song that appears on both lists is the wonderful “Alfonsina y el mar”):
1. CARLOS GARDEL Mano a mano (1928)
2. MERCEDES SOSA Alfonsina y el mar (1968)
3. ALMENDRA Muchacha (ojos de papel) (1969)
4. ANDRÉS CALAMARO No son horas (1999)

SOUTH KOREA:
1. 산울림 (San Ul Rim) 내 마음에 주단을 깔고 (Lying Silks and Satins on My Heart) (1978)

5. ARKISTIS PROTOPSALTI "S’agapo"

8. MIKIS THEODORAKIS "Zorba’s Dance"
9. SAN UL RIM "Lying Silks and Satins on My Heart"
10. FEMI KUTI "Truth Don Die"
Thanks, Honorio, for joining the game. I enjoyed your songs especially those from Argentina. Next group C is half very easy (England , US), half very difficult (Slovenia, Algeria).
Slovenia ist the home of avant-garde art/music-collective Laibach, here with their fascinating collage of Israeli and Palestinian national anthems from the 2006 album "Volk"
From Algeria I recommend the compilation "1970’s Algerian Proto-Rai Underground". The Bellemou & Benfissa song (probably from 1965) shows the vitality of the pop scene in the early years of independence.
Argentina
Carlos Gardel: Mis Buenos Aires querido (1934)
Enrique Santos Discepolo: Cambalache (1935)
Astor Piazolla: Adios, Nonino (1959)

Luis Aguilé: La Chatunga (196?)

Los Rodríguez: Milonga del marinero y el capitán (1995)

Andrés Calamaro: Te quiero igual (1999)
Entre Ríos: Si hoy (2003)
Greece
Mikis Theodorakis: Zorba’s Dance (1964)
Vangelis: Charriots of Fire (1981)
Nigeria
Sade: Your Love is King (1984)
South Korea
3rd Line Butterfly: Storehouse synthesis
(2002)
These songs can be heard on this list of Spotify, except those with a link to youtube.
¡Sí, Miguel! ¡Discépolo y "Cambalache"! ¡Qué bueno, ché!
The first time I heard this song (I guess like many people in Spain) was in the version that Joan Manuel Serrat included in its 1984 live album, and his lyrics has always seemed one of the most brilliant of the twentieth century.
Here is an English translation. I don’t know if it is as good as those made Honorio, then translate "gil" as "stupid" does not seem quite right.
Sorry for not delving deeper into this topic, but no list of music from Uruguay should be without "La Cumparsita", written by Gerardo Matos Rodríguez in the 1910s.
Which reminds me that I completely forgot to vote for Marilyn Monroe's "I Wanna Be Loved by You" in the 1959 poll...
I continue with group C (England, USA, Algeria, Slovenia). To avoid the usual all-time-best-of-list I restrict it in the case of England and US to songs from 2010.

Any fans of the real World Cup, feel free to participate in the prediction game now underway on the "Off-Topic" forum. I know a lot of people don't make their way over there, as it's mostly the '00s movie poll over there right now, so just giving a heads-up in the main forum.

Hey, Miguel and Charlie Driggs, great Spanish music choices!!
I've enjoyed a lot this game, Charlie!!
Thank you, Honorio, and Miguel, too. I used the songs for some mixtapes for friends. Indeed, my knowledge of the spanish pop scene is poor. Enjoy the world cup. I hope the spanish team is in better condition than Italy.
What methods do you guys use to find music from different countries? Pretty much every music site I currently visit is very Anglo-centric, with a few exceptions such as Os Mutantes and Serge Gainsbourg. I really want to expand into music from more foreign countries.
