Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1956, 1957 and 1958

Welcome to the Volume 3 of the 50s & 60s acclaimed music forum poll. This month we will deal with the years 1956, 1957 and 1958, the golden age of rock ‘n’ roll. During 1955 and 1956 the 10-inch LP albums were completely displaced by the new 12-inch format that allowed to include more songs (usually 12 songs instead of the 8 songs of the 10" LPs). In fact many of the albums that we have voted during the two first months of the poll were re-released including 4 (or more) songs even from posterior recording sessions. For instance our winner of the 1954 poll, “Chet Baker Sings”, was released again in 1956 including 6 new songs recorded in July of 1956 (while the original sessions for the first 8 songs took place the 15th of February of 1954, significantly the day after Valentine’s day).

Please submit at least 5 songs and/or albums, preferably but not necessarily with ranking, lists without ranking will get an average score of 10 points per song/album. The deadline is midnight on the 31st of March. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.

You may find useful to have a look at the albums and songs lists of:
- Acclaimed Music: 1956 albums, 1957 albums, 1958 albums, 1956 songs, 1957 songs and 1958 songs
- Rate Your Music: 1956 albums, 1957 albums, 1958 albums, 1956 songs, 1957 songs, 1958 songs and, since some of the album considered compilations in Rate Your Music are eligible on this poll, the 1956 compilations, 1957 compilations and 1958 compilations.

Have a nice poll…

My Top 5 albums of 1956-1958 as an advance:
1. ELVIS PRESLEY "Elvis Presley" (#19 in my all-time list, 1956)
2. BILLIE HOLIDAY "Lady in Satin" (1958)
3. ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST "West Side Story" (1957)
4. FRANK SINATRA "Songs for Swingin' Lovers!" (1956)
5. THE CRICKETS "The "Chirping" Crickets" (1957)

You can listen to these albums in my preliminary Spotify list: Albums 56-58

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1956, 1957 and 1958

I already have an eligibility question

It is about Art Blakey's fabulous live album, "Au Club Saint Germain"

According to RYM and other sites, it was released in 1958 but as 3 separate LPs (vol. 1-3) but there was also a box set (vol. 1-3).

Do I have to list it as 3 different albums or as one ?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1956, 1957 and 1958

This is my Spotify-song list in progress (quite possible that my access will be canceled soon). Some important albums are missing, especially Sabus "Safari", Guy Warrens "Themes For African Drums" and the Folkways record of steelband The Katzenjammers.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1956, 1957 and 1958

Charlie, the two Miriam Makeba/Skylarks songs are gorgeous.
Do you know which year they are from ?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1956, 1957 and 1958

"Orlando" is from 1956 and "Mtshakasi" from 1958 (recording dates) according to this Makeba discography.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1956, 1957 and 1958

Perhaps we could have a "lists in progress" thread? Or maybe it would be too messy?

Why not, if we don't post updates too often

Honorio, what is your opinion ?

Brad, I'll wait until I have a consistent list to send it to you if you don't mind

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1956, 1957 and 1958

Romain, there is a mistake in your list. "Quand on n'a que l'amour" (the album) was released in 1957. Instead, the song of the same title was released in 1956 on an EP.

OK ! Thanks !

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1956, 1957 and 1958

my understanding in that Miles Davis' "Workin'", though recorded in 1956, was not released until 1959. Can anyone confirm?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1956, 1957 and 1958

Yes, give me a day or so and I will trace the date of release of the albums voted so far. But yes, Romain, I'm afraid that some of the Miles Davis albums that you voted were recorded in 1956 but released later. Go to Rate Your Music and you will find the more or less correct date releases.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1956, 1957 and 1958

The songs:

1. Sabu - Nadenga - 1956

A 12-minute tour de force with hypnotic bongo drums, erratic saxophone loops, and mysterious voices from the nowhere.

2. Screaming Jay Hawkins - I Put A Spell on you - 1957

One of the most covered songs in pop history. But the sluggish original is still the most exciting. The legend says, everybody in the studio was totally boozed while recording.

3. Moondog - Surf Session - 1956

In this song from his second album the blind genius from the streets of New York combines the atmospheric minimalism of his beginnings with a compelling melody.

4. The Teddy Bears - To Know Him Is To Love Him - 1958

A guilty pleasure, but Carol Conners alluring voice even turned the head of Elvis.

5./6. Little Willie John / Peggy Lee - Fever - 1956/1958

The warm and soulful original and the cool jazzy cover stand coequal side by side.

7. The Katzenjammers - Love Is a Many Splendored Thing - 1957

A cobweb becomes music in this steel band version of the Oscar-winning song.

8. Jack Costanzo - Malaguena - 1958

An orgy in rhytm. The connecting link between afro-cuban jazz and latin rock.

9. Bernard Herrmann - Vertigo: Prelude and Rooftop - 1958

The musical exposition for Alfred Hitchcocks most experimental film makes dizzy before James Stewart set a foot on the roof.

10. Charles Mingus - Pithecanthropus Erectus - 1956

The brillant title track of the visionary jazz album describes the rise and fall of mankind in ten gorgeous eerie minutes.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1956, 1957 and 1958

Hi Charlie Driggs, John and Romain (a big big welcome for the last two to the 50s poll!!). Many thanks for your lists.
I’m afraid I’m not going to be able to trace the eligibility of the 50s releases so exhaustively as I’ve done before for personal reasons (I got an important exam in 30th of May) but of course I will try to trace the eligibility of your voted albums and songs and the ones who got a different release date on AM and RYM. So please keep voting, don’t wait for my eligibility research, I will trace it after the voting.
Go to the eligibility thread to see details about your votes so far.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1956, 1957 and 1958

I included everything I wanted to vote for so if you could, just omit the ineligibles.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1956, 1957 and 1958

Less than 10 days for the dead line and very few lists this month so far. I can understand that the first two months (1950-1955) were unknown territory for most of us but, come on, 1956-1958 was (no doubt) one of the best periods for music!! I’m sure that EVERY poster on AM Forum could easily come up with at least a Top 10 of songs from that period. In fact it’s easy to fill a terrific Top 50 if only with songs by Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Ray Charles!
Now that the poll frenzy is coming to an end so, as Eddie Cochran would have said, C’mon Everybody!

Favorite Albums and Songs of 1956

The delay on my part is due strictly to the sheer volume of music over these years. I'm definitely overwhelmed by the 3 years per month rate.

Anyway, as much as I love and respect the artists you just mentioned, Honorio, for me the 1956 album chart belongs to Ella...

Re: Favorite Albums and Songs of 1956

here's my album list in progress

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1956, 1957 and 1958

Honorio

I wholeheartedly second Honorio's call. So far the participation in the 50s poll has been disappointingly low, which is a shame. The rock 'n' roll era is The Source. The DNA of all rock music, including the current generation of bands. Just ask Jack White or the Strokes. For anyone interested in the bigger context of pop/rock music the work of the great grandrockin'daddies should be a must. Try it, you'll be in for a treat.

Many many thanks to all newcomers. Sorry Alex D but both "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Why Do Fools Fall in Love?" were released in December of 1955 and voted the previous month (Folsom was elected but Fools ended just outside the gate). So not eligible for this poll, your new #1 will be for Ray Charles.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1956, 1957 and 1958

I cannot participate this month unfortunately. I'm typing this on my phone because my flight from Madrid was canceled and there's no flight until Friday, but they put me up in a 4-star hotel with free buffets and swimmingpool for 3 nights. So yeah, not too unhappy. Also won't be able to update the ongoing polls post for a few more days, but I think Henrik has updated it a few times as well.

Re: Favorite Albums and Songs of 1957

1956 : songs

Listen to it on Spotify

1956 is one of the best years of all-time when it comes to popular music. It's the golden year of early rock 'n' roll. It's a great year for French chanson (one of the best Brassens albums IMO, plus Piaf, Brel, Vian, Salvador… , and for jazz as well.
I know that only 20 songs will pass, but I think that down to #35 every song deserved to be in the next round.

1 . Little Richard - Long Tall Sally

What can I say ? It's my favorite song of the rnr era. It's wild. It's crazy. It's exuberant. Like schleuse said, I don't think it's about a real woman if u know what I mean. At the heighth of his powers, LIttle Richard was better than Elvis. Than any one.

2 . Jacques Brel - Quand on n'a que l'amour

3 . Georges Brassens - Je me suis fait tout petit

4 . Jimmy Rogers - Walking By Myself

For these 3 songs, see the recommendation thread

5 . Howlin' Wolf - Smokestack Lightening
see here

6 . Fats Domino - Blueberry Hill
7 . Elvis Presley - Hound Dog
8 . Carl Perkins - Blue Suede Shoes
9 . Elvis Presley - Blue Suede Shoes
10 . Georges Brassens - Colombine

11 . Chuck Berry - Roll Over Beethoven
12 . Elvis Presley - Heartbreak Hotel
13 . Georges Brassens - La Légende de la nonne
14 . Ray Charles - Hallelujah I Love Her So
15 . Elvis Presley - Just Because
16 . Gene Vincent - Be Bop A Lula
17 . Sonny Rollins - Strode Rode
18 . Screaming Jay Hawkins - I Put A Spell On You
19 . Roy Orbison - Ooby Dooby
20 . Henri Salvador - Oh si y avait pas ton père

About the French songs here : I could have included a couple more Brassens, but I had mercy of you ... The two above are adaptations of Verlaine and Victor Hugo poems. The song by Salvador is a French Calypso.
Please go to Spotify to hear it, it's hilarious (even if you don't understand French i guess). 1956 was a great year for Salvador. He showed all his talent by singing the first (and probably the only decent) French rock'n' roll songs, he recorded pop, calypso, comic songs, romantic songs, tropical music and a great LP of jazz guitar ! Most of his lyrics were written by Vian and they had a lot of fun in the studio.

21 . Lord Ivanhoe - Lift The Iron Curtain (calypso)
22 . Georges Brassens - Marinette (chanson comique)
23 . Johnny Burnette - The Train Kept A Rollin'(rock)
24 . Nat King Cole - Caravan (jazz)
25 . Johnny Cash - I Walk The Line (country/rockabilly)
26 . Magali Noël - Fais-moi mal, Johnny ! (French rock'n'roll)
27 . Ella Fitzgerald - I Love Paris (vocal)
28 . Bo Diddley - Who Do You Love ? (groundbreaking rock)
29 . Elvis Presley - Don't Be Cruel (pop-rock)
30 . The Osborne Brothers - Ruby (bluegrass)

Honorio: I'll be in a place without internet during the Easter holidays. So if you have to change some albums in each list (especially in the case of Blossom Dearie: it was impossible for me to know for sure what year his records were released), put them in the order you think best. I trust your wisdom.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1956

After another impressive set of list by Mindrocker voting is now officially closed. Many many thanks to all the participants and congratulations for such excellent lists. A big welcome to all the newcomers (John, Romain, Superfurry, Listyguy, Alex D. and Brose). We had 15 different voters this month, 4 more than the last month. Stephan and Stone, hope you can join us again in following editions (and Harpo and nj that participated on the first edition, you are both invited to the party too).
Before beginning with the results I must say the most exciting part of ruling a poll (the ones that did it before me know what I’m talking about) is compiling the results. Seeing that your favourite song goes up when somebody else votes for it, or thinking: no, not that one, that belongs to the top 10… All while you listen on Spotify the songs that other voted and you didn’t know. In particular I’m enjoying a lot going through Mindrocker’s playlists, it's like entering a Tarantino movie (and sorry, Mindrocker, I know I'm simplifying too much).

And without further ado, these are the results for best albums of 1956. The albums going to the final round are:
1. Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley
2. Frank Sinatra - Songs for Swingin' Lovers!
3. Ella Fitzgerald - Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Song Book
4. Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
5. Duke Ellington - Ellington at Newport

Although after the first 4 votes it wasn’t even in the Top 5 finally Elvis debut album conquered the throne with more than 100 points of difference with Sinatra, the second qualified. Anyway the biggest difference still is for “Voice of Xtabay” on the first edition with 115 points more than “Ella Sings Gershwin”. The rest of the Top 10:
6. Georges Brassens - Nº 4
7. Odetta - Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues
8. Johnny Burnette and the Rock ‘n Roll Trio - Johnny Burnette and the Rock ‘n Roll Trio
9. Moondog - Moondog
10. Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong - Ella and Louis

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1957

Are you ready for more? These are the best albums of 1957:
1. Little Richard - Here's Little Richard
2. The Crickets - The "Chirping" Crickets
3. John Coltrane - Blue Train
4. Original Broadway Cast - West Side Story
5. Ella Fitzgerald - Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Song Book

Penniman was never been threaten by the chirping Crickets, he took an early lead that never abandoned. The biggest surprise was the qualification of Ella for the third time (after Gershwin and Porter), she appeared suddenly after not being voted for the first six voters, but her high position on the last lists was enough for her qualification. The rest of the Top 10:
6. Georges Brassens - 5
7. Johnny Cash – Johnny Cash With His Hot and Blue Guitar!
8. Miles Davis – Miles Ahead
9. Thelonious Monk – Brilliant Corners
10. Sabu – Palo Congo

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1957

Go, Ella, Go!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1958

Let’s end with the albums results. The best albums of 1958, the ones that go to the next round are:
1. Billie Holiday - Lady in Satin
2. Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley
3. Nina Simone - Jazz as Played in an Exclusive Side Street Club
4. Miles Davis - Porgy and Bess
5. Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - Moanin'

During most of the voting period there was a tight duel between two black ladies: Billie at her twilight and Nina at her dawn. Finally the tortured Billie won the first prize and moreover Bo Diddley came like a rocket and conquered the second position at the last minute. The rest of the Top 10:
6. Little Richard – Little Richard
7. Serge Gainsbourg – Du chant à la une!...
8. Bernard Herrmann – Vertigo
9. Georges Brassens – Volume 6
10. The Everly Brothers – The Everly Brothers (They’re Off and Rolling)

Go, Ella, Go!

Such a shame Ella & Louis didn't make it.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1957

Poor Georges...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1957

...or should I say poor nicolas?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1957

Such a shame Ella & Louis didn't make it.

The overabundance of Ella production during this 3-year period may explain the splitting of votes. For instance I voted for “Ella and Louis Again”.
Henrik
Poor Georges...

Yes, this time three Top 10s for Brassens but no album qualified. The top 10 are so consistently good that I’m tempted to expand it to a Top 100 instead of the announced Top 50. But since many people have not listened to many 50s albums the participation probably will decrease so probably it would be wiser to stay with a Top 50.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1956

First results for the songs lists, beginning with the best songs of 1956:
1. Elvis Presley - Heartbreak Hotel
2. Elvis Presley - Hound Dog
3. Chuck Berry and His Combo - Roll Over Beethoven
4. Frank Sinatra - I've Got You Under My Skin
5. Johnny Cash and Tennessee Two - I Walk the Line
6. Howlin' Wolf - Smoke Stack Lightning
7. Elvis Presley - Don't Be Cruel
8. Little Richard and His Band - Long Tall Sally
9. Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps - Be-Bop-a-Lula
10. Harry Belafonte - Banana Boat (Day-O)

As I told before the most interesting part of compiling the results is to see how the positions are evolving. Elvis did not reach the top position with “Heartbreak Hotel” till the last vote by Mindrocker (and I’m glad of that, “Hound Dog” was #1 of 1953 with the way-better original version by ‘Big Mama’ Thornton). And it was interesting too the battle for the 10th position, finally Belafonte won with only three voters (but in the upper part of their lists) and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins stayed outside the gates despite being voted by 7 different posters (but in the lower part of our lists) with even a #1 position (Charlie Driggs’). Contrary to what happened with Elvis, I’m not that glad of that final result. Anyway the list is (again) excellent.

For the record, I would fully support 100.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1957

Maybe it's not the time now to discuss this. Final round is in November, I surely will bring back this issue, maybe we can vote it...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1957

Time for the best songs of 1957:
1. Elvis Presley - Jailhouse Rock
2. Sam Cooke - You Send Me
3. The Crickets - That'll Be the Day
4. Jerry Lee Lewis - Great Balls of Fire
5. Buddy Holly - Peggy Sue
6. Jerry Lee Lewis - Whole Lot of Shakin’ Going On
7. The Everly Brothers - Bye Bye Love
8. Elvis Presley - All Shook Up
9. Jackie Wilson - Reet Petite (The Finest Girl You Ever Want to Meet)
10. The Crickets - Not Fade Away

A neatly rock ‘n’ roll selection with two drops of proto-soul courtesy of Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson. Although Cooke took an early lead, finally was Elvis again who gained the number one. But the real winner of 1957 was Buddy Holly who managed to put three songs on the Top 10 being as Buddy Holly or as The Crickets. And the number 11 was for Buddy too, in fact “Everyday” was the #10 but the vote of Mindrocker changed it for Buddy’s “Not Fade Away” at the very last moment. Frankly I don’t know which one I prefer: the Diddley-like “Not Fade Away” or the lullaby-like “Everyday”, they’re both fantastic. Maybe “Everyday” could have been the less obvious choice but “Not Fade Away” is the classic.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1958

We have a triple tie at the end of the list of the best songs of 1958 so we will need a tiebreaker round. These were the most voted songs:
1. Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode
2. Eddie Cochran - Summertime Blues
3. Jackie Wilson - Lonely Teardrops
4. The Everly Brothers - All I Have to Do Is Dream
5. Little Richard - Good Golly, Miss Molly
6. Link Wray & His Ray Men - Rumble
7. Chuck Berry - Sweet Little Sixteen
8. Nina Simone - My Baby Just Cares for Me
9. Peggy Lee - Fever
10. The Coasters - Yakety Yak
11. The Platters - Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

As everyone could expect, Johnny was Goode and beat everyone out, obtaining 140 points more than Eddie Cochran.
But Peggy Lee, the Coasters and the Platters got 85 points each so they’re tied on the 9th position. Peggy is not going to need the tie-breaker vote because she was voted by 6 different people. But both The Coasters’ “Yakety Yak” and The Platters’ “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” were voted by three people. So:
- Miguel and Brad voted for the Platters.
- VanillaFire1000 and Alex D voted for the Coasters.
- John voted for both but the Platters were his #12 and the Coasters his #18.
So please the other 10 voters let me know your opinion:
The refreshing and humorous take on the parents-kids conflictive relationship during the 50s brilliantly penned by Leiber-Stoller and with that memorable King Curtis “yakety” sax?
Or the romantic and elegant take on true love and suffering with that velvet melody, that lush orchestral arrangement and that heavenly Tony Williams lead vocal?
Place your bets/votes, gentlemen…

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1958

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

Thanks Honorio and all other voters for another exciting month of music discovery!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1958

By far, "Smoke gets in you eyes".

And if I have to vote for the 3 best songs of 1958, I put :
1. Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode
2. Nina Simone - My Baby Just Cares for Me
3. The Platters - Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

Thanks.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1958

Another vote for Smoke Gets In Your Eyes.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1958

An easy vote for "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1958

Off topic:

I do not know if you saw this thread, but I think it is very interesting. Especially for Mindrocker and Nicolas, who are genuine musical encyclopedias.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1958

Smoke Gets In Your Eyes

and to henrik : I'm a little sad Brassens didn't pass, but he's got already 2 albums going to the next round.
If Stephan had been there, maybe the n°4 would have made it. It's his best albums of the 50s IMO.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1958

I think it might have nicolas, sorry. Blame easyJet.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1958

Honorio, thanks for moderating this 3rd part of the 50s poll. Oh yeah, my vote goes to Yakety Yak.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1958 (and the Excel file)

Well, "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" won easily the tie-breaker vote so it goes to the next round as #10 of 1958. The final 1958 songs list:
1. Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode
2. Eddie Cochran - Summertime Blues
3. Jackie Wilson - Lonely Teardrops
4. The Everly Brothers - All I Have to Do Is Dream
5. Little Richard - Good Golly, Miss Molly
6. Link Wray & His Ray Men - Rumble
7. Chuck Berry - Sweet Little Sixteen
8. Nina Simone - My Baby Just Cares for Me
9. Peggy Lee - Fever
10. The Platters - Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

And the Excel file
