Rank the Years of the 00s

Recently, there's been a bit of discussion about which years are the strongest/weakest of the 2000s, and I thought it would be nice to give such a discussion its own thread. So, what do you think?

I've used Henrik's formula to rank the years based on my top 6 albums and songs of the year, and here is how it came out.

1. 2001 (#1 albums, #1 songs)
2. 2003 (#2 albums, #3 songs)
3. 2004 (#3 albums, #2 songs)
4. 2007 (#4 albums, #4 songs)
5. 2000 (#5 albums, #5 songs)
6. 2009 (#7 albums, #6 songs)
7. 2005 (#6 albums, #9 songs)
8. 2008 (#8 albums, #7 songs)
9. 2006 (#9 albums, #8 songs)
10. 2002 (#10 albums, #10 songs)

Re: Rank the Years of the 00s

With my most recents lists, it goes like this :

1) 2005 (#1 albums, #4 songs) : 6 albums in my top 40 of all time, that's much too tough for competition
2) 2000 (#2 albums, #1 songs) : a 5-star album would have been necessary to win the 1 st place (Relationship of Command being my favourite "not 5-star" album) but the songs, lead by B.O.B., allows 2000 a great consolation prize
3) 2004 (#4 albums, #2 songs) : Kanye and Arcade Fire help 2004 reach the podium, even though album wise it is clearly weaker than the year ending 4th
4) 2006 (#3 albums, #7 songs) : lead by Silent Shout, 2006 lacks some better songs
5) 2002 (#6 albums, #3 songs) : very close call, but Queens of the Stone Age almost makes half the points all by themselves
6) 2007 (#5 albums, #5 songs)
7) 2003 (#7 albums, #6 songs)
8) 2008 (#8 albums, #8 songs)
9) 2001 (#10 albums, #9 songs) : with only one album in my top 50 and one song in my top 100, 2001 will most likely end at the bottom of that list if I do the exercise again in a few months
10)2009 (#9 albums, #10 songs)

It is a bit unfair with 2009 which will most likely overtake 2001 (and maybe 2008), and with 2007 which is the year with the most albums in my top 200 of all time (but with only Sound of Silver ranked really high).

Re: Rank the Years of the 00s

Moonbeam, can you pust Henrik's formula? I actually wanted to calculate my top ten artists of the 00s based on my album and singles lists...

Re: Rank the Years of the 00s

2007 ("Boxer," my favorite album of the 2000s and #3 all-time for me, "Neon Bible," "In Rainbows," "The Con," and so much else. Amazing year.)
2008 (No amazing albums, but many great ones: Los Campesinos!, Frightened Rabbit, The Gaslight Anthem to name a few)
2005 (Highlights include "Illinois," "The Sunset Tree," "Silent Alarm," and "Nashville")
2003 ("Chutes Too Narrow" and one of my personal favorites, "Everything Goes Numb." Decent year.)
2009 ("Hospice," "Manners," and a few good songs here and there)
2002 (Interpol and Beck and not much else. Very little variety.)
2000 ("Kid A" might be the most influential/acclaimed album of the decade, but it does nothing for me. But, "Daisies of the Galaxy" and "Excuses for Travellers" are both amazing, so credit there)
2004 (Seems like there was only "Funeral" this year. That's a pity because "Funeral" is amazing, but can't make up for the lack of other material.)
2006 ("Boys and Girls in America," but not much else)
2001 (Worst year. Only The Strokes make my Top 100 albums [and I have a lot of 2000s albums in my Top 100].)

Re: Rank the Years of the 00s

This is hard. Every selection involves deciding whether a few great albums is better than several good ones.

I'll take a different approach. Using my computer program, I'll take the average of the top 6 albums for each year and weight them 2 2 2 1 1 1.

It should be noted that the depth of my musical collection blows up considerably when you hit 2005, so the latter half of the decade has an advantage. (But of course, the later it is, the less time it's had to sink into my brain, so maybe it's a wash).

2000: 60.15
2006: 58.47
2005: 54.92
2002: 54.59
2007: 51.90
2004: 51.45
2003: 47.60
2001: 43.95
2009: 48.00*
2008: 41.37

*The way my program works inflates groups of albums that have gotten more attention.

To give some sort of context, 1971 gets 75.02, 1981 gets 37.11, and 1976 gets 27.97.

2000 and 2007 are in my opinion two of the best years of all time. They're so heavy with incredible albums (and songs) that the other years barely come close. Keep in mind I like each year of the last decade, but the last 3 on the list were pretty mediocre.
