Re: EOD top 25 by US, UK, ROW critics - which list is your favorite?

USA easy. Kid A over Funeral and YHF over Is This It. Major win. (Though I also like the Antony & The Johnsons top 5 spot internationally.)

The UK list is terrible. No Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and High Rankings for Arctic Monkeys and Amy Winehouse.

I have to laugh, Jonathan, though probably at myself mostly. The last album I purchased when it was current was Appetite For Destruction, so I'm a bit faded.

I can't and couldn't begin to guess as to which list is best or why. All I can say is this. The only album that I listen to repeatedly that shows up in any of these lists is Raising Sand. So, I'm a bit faded, happily.

Re: EOD top 25 by US, UK, ROW critics - which list is your favorite?

US.

I can't fathom thinking Is This It is the greatest album released the entire decade. US has the worst rap picks out of the three, but the best for everything else.

Re: EOD top 25 by US, UK, ROW critics - which list is your favorite?

Is This It as best album of the decade? Pah, the USA have got it right, although might put Funeral ahead of Kid A.
I like the fact that Dizzee is represented in the UK list. He went to my school and his album is so rich and rewarding.

What's wrong with Amy Winehouse & the Arctic monkeys ? Too succesful ?

Re: EOD top 25 by US, UK, ROW critics - which list is your favorite?

USA.

Kid A is a far better pick for best of the decade than Is This It, and I think it will eventually pass Is This It on the acclaimed music master list, because of all-time lists over the next few years.

Every album on the USA list is very solid, and imo accurately reflects what music was good over the last ten years. The UK list has Arctic Monkeys (too Strokes derivitive, too much filler) and Amy Winehouse (not that bad, but there are way better albums) in the T5, and some weaker albums down the list such as Elbow's The Seldom Seen Kid and The Libertines' Up the Bracket. The EU list is also really good and has some nice eclectic choices, but top-to-bottom I dont think it's as good as the USA list. For reference, here are the albums that appear in the T25 of just one list and not either of the others:

USA and Canada
7. West, Kanye - The College Dropout
14. Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica
16. Beck - Sea Change
17. Interpol - Turn On the Bright Lights
19. Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It in People
22. M.I.A. - Kala
23. Spoon - Kill the Moonlight
24. Postal Service, The - Give Up

UK and Ireland
11. Harvey, PJ - Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea
12. Dizzee Rascal - Boy in da Corner
14. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
15. Plant, Robert & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand
16. Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid19. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
20. Libertines, The - Up the Bracket
25. Gorillaz - Demon Days

Rest of the World
6. Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
13. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillon
20. M.I.A. - Arular
22. Portishead - Third
24. Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head
25. Primal Scream - Xtrmntr

Re: EOD top 25 by US, UK, ROW critics - which list is your favorite?

U-S-A! U-S-A! We may have to deal with Rolling Stone, but overall I think we have the best critics.

Generally, I think that the American lists focus on getting solely the "best" albums on the list, and that the European (ROW) critics focus on having a more diverse collection of albums on each list. Case in point, if you look at the RS EOD lists, they are pretty much chalk - everything you expect would be there, in about the place you would expect. Meanwhile, something like the nollnolltalet.se list has a lot of idiosyncratic, unique songs on it (whether they were popular with critics/the public or not).

Back to Black is a solid album, but not a top 10 worthy imo.

Whatever they Say I Am... is contrived. It's like C- team strokes or B-team Franz. It'd be like naming a Turtles album a top 10 of the 1960s.

Re: EOD top 25 by US, UK, ROW critics - which list is your favorite?

This is my top 25 from the 3 lists. I refuse to count Sigur Ros as it's a 1999 album, but it'd be in the teens.

01. Wilco- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (USA, ROW)
02. Radiohead- Kid A (USA, UK, ROW)
03. OutKast- Stankonia (USA, ROW)
04. Arcade Fire- Funeral (USA, UK, ROW)
05. The Strokes- Is This It (USA, UK, ROW)
06. Jay-Z- The Blueprint (USA, UK, ROW)
07. The White Stripes- Elephant (USA, UK, ROW)
08. Eminem- The Marshall Mathers LP (USA, ROW)
09. Radiohead- In Rainbows (USA, UK)
10. Sufjan Stevens- Illinois (USA, UK, ROW)
11. Kanye West- The College Dropout (USA)
12. LCD Soundsystem- Sound of Silver (USA, UK, ROW)
13. Animal Collective- Merriweather Post Pavillion (ROW)
14. Antony & The Johnsons- I Am a Bird Now (ROW)
15. Beck- Sea Change (USA)
16. Bob Dylan- Love & Theft (USA, UK)
17. Modest Mouse- Moon & Antarctica (USA)
18. Interpol- Turn on The Bright Lights (USA)
19. The White Stripes- White Blood Cells (USA, UK, ROW)
20. Franz Ferdinand- Franz Ferdinand (ROW)
21. Portishead- Third (ROW)
22. M.I.A.- Kala (USA)
23. Daft Punk- Discovery (USA, ROW)
24. The Streets- Original Pirate Material (UK, ROW)
25. The Flaming Lips- Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (USA, UK, ROW)

I have no UK exclusives, a few USA and a few ROW.

Of the UK exclusives, I'm a fan of FF debut, and Bon Iver. I think the PJ Harvey album isn't nearly as captivating as her 90s material.

Re: EOD top 25 by US, UK, ROW critics - which list is your favorite?

What about throwing the Rate Your Music top 25 of the 2000s in there for good measure? A couple of caveats: I used only albums that had a minimum of 3000 ratings to eliminate metal/prog bias and obscure albums. However, this meant excluding a few albums that generally found their way onto EOY or EOD lists that I didn't want to exclude, so I included them with the number of ratings in parenthesis. Also, I removed some metal/prog albums that I didn't feel reflected the taste of the AM forumn but had sufficient ratings to qualify. These albums included 3 by Opeth, 2 by Porcupine Tree, and 1 by Explosions in the Sky.

1. Radiohead - Kid A
2. Arcade Fire - Funeral
3. Godspeed You! Black Emporer - Lift Yr. Skinny...
4. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
5. Tool - Lateralus
6. Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
7. Tom Waits - Orphas: Brawlers... (1,590 ratings)
8. Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica
9. Madvillain - Madvillainy (2,304)
10. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
11. Radiohead - In Rainbows
12. Sigur Ros - ()
13. At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command
14. Radiohead - Amnesiac
15. Queens of The Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf
16. Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
17. Nick Cave... - No More Shall We Part (1,968)
18. Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It in People
19. Mastodon - Leviathon (2,656)
20. The National - Alligator (2,073)
21. Jay-Z - The Blueprint (1,446)
22. The National - Boxer
23. The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium.
24. Bjork - Vespertine
25. The Strokes - Is this It?

Hmm. Well, Arctic monkeys are top 10 in both the UK and ROW list, so, it can't be that bad. But hey, I like nearly all albums that are in these 3 lists! For me this discussion is about albums I enjoy and those I dig even more, really :)

Re: EOD top 25 by US, UK, ROW critics - which list is your favorite?

Maybe I was a tad harsh... Monkeys is decent but heh...I dunno it's just a dissapointing choice for top 5.

Re: EOD top 25 by US, UK, ROW critics - which list is your favorite?

US

but i don't really care for many of the albums on these lists. i hope for future revisionism where the arctic monkeys, moon and antarctica, yoshimi, and in rainbows are not on these lists and Is This It is not in the top 10.

but that's just me

Re: EOD top 25 by US, UK, ROW critics - which list is your favorite?

I'm gonna have to go with US as well, although I like the "Rest of the world" list as well. How about this:

1-9: US
10-14: UK
15-17: RotW
18-19: UK
20-22: US
23-24: RotW
25: US

Re: EOD top 25 by US, UK, ROW critics - which list is your favorite?

There are things I like about all 3 lists, so it's hard to say. I love that the US ranks Sound of Silver so highly, as well as Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.

I like the order of the top 3 given by the UK and the Rest of the World. I also like the UK highly rating Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea and Demon Days, and the rest of the world highly rating Illinois and Franz Ferdinand.

It would be interesting to compare our own decade lists based on where we call home. Are we going to have a thread for posting such lists? It shouldn't be too tough to throw together a spreadsheet like the ones we've been using for such a purpose, and I'd be happy to do it!
