Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

Looking at the list, "idem" means Self-Titled.

Another great list, with MPP #1! Very unexpected. Same thing with LCD first album being there and not Sound of Silver.

I hate that trend.

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

I agree. Murphy writes a mean dance song, but his sad songs are even better!

Another interesting list. Sufjan sure is taking a jump. MPP at 1 is cool.

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

A Ghost is Born over Yankee Hotel Foxtrot?

If I did the math right, this would be the new top 10:

01. Arcade Fire- Funeral
02. Radiohead- Kid A
03. The Strokes- Is This It
04. OutKast- Stankonia
05. Wilco- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
06. Jay-Z- The Blueprint
07. LCD Soundsystem- Sound of Silver
08. Sufjan Stevens- Illinois
09. Animal Collective- Merriweather Post Pavillion
10. The White Stripes- White Blood Cells

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

what a weird list. kinda neat though, it's got good picks just an odd order

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

Hopefully we'll get an update tomorrow!

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

Thanks Pablo!

Did RDL present a list of Spanish albums as well?

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

Wow, I didn't expected a RDL coming so soon. They always wait till the end of year, in fact with the 90s list they waited till February if I remember well. Anyaway it's a quite typical RDL list (Animal Collective at #1, jeezz!) but with one unexpected feature: Radiohead on the top 20!! They've always been anti-Radiohead. Maybe the new writers on the staff are changing things.
Now I'm working but the next thing I'm going to do is going to the closer shop and buy the RDL new issue. Henrik, I will post the Spanish lists (if there are some).

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

Just bought the issue. It’s the 25 years anniversary of RDL, that’s why they’ve advanced. The presentation is excellent and includes many different lists. And, since two patients hasn’t arrived yet, I’m going to try to post lists while I can.

Best songs (they called this section “The decade in 15 singles”):
1. MISSY ELLIOTT “Get Ur Freak On” (2000)
2. OUTKAST “Hey Ya!” (2003)
3. LCD SOUNDSYSTEM “Losing My Edge” (2002)
4. M.I.A. “Paper Planes” (2007)
5. GNARLS BARKLEY “Crazy” (2006)
6. BEYONCÉ “Crazy in Love” (2003)
7. HERCULES AND LOVE AFFAIR “Blind” (2008)
8. FRANZ FERDINAND “Take Me Out” (2004)
9. R.E.M. “Imitation of Life” (2001)
10. MADONNA “Music” (2000)
11. KYLIE MINOGUE “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” (2001)
12. RIHANNA “Umbrella” (2007)
13. THE STROKES “Hard to Explain” (2001)
14. THE AVALANCHES “Since I Left You” (2000)
15. COLDPLAY “Viva la vida” (2008)

Well, although it seems like a playlist for a party (lately the acclaimed song tends toward dance big hits), the presentation is excellent. They asked 15 different Spanish comic book artists to illustrate every song with a picture, and some of the choices are great.

60. AINA “Bipartite” (2001)

Not bad, despite notable absences as “El tiempo de las cerezas” (my favourite 00s Spanish album), “Vivalaguerra” or “Little Heart Attacks”. And the confirmation of 2009 as the weakest year of the decade for Spanish music.

Thanks Honorio!

And now, I gotta get back to work...

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

Henrik, I assume I should add the Spanish list as well. Correct?

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

Yes, thanks Harold.

I'd rather keep the spreadsheet simple, but if the overall ranking looks too weird with a large amount of national lists, I might need to work out some kind of weighting system.

Any chance those pictures could be found online?

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

42.Low "Coses que vam perdre al foc"

I assume this is "Things We Lost in the Fire".

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

It's so bizarre to me how the world is so obsessed with English music. While the English speaking world seems to care very little for foreign music. You also see foreign bands writing music in English. Is music in English really the best? Not that there's anything wrong with that. Maybe it's just the language that works best for songs. I am a pretty multi-cultural guy by the way. I've been all over the world, and lived in a couple western European countries (I was in the military).

I'd like to know what people whose primary language isn't English think.

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

I was listening to an interview by Phoenix recently and they said "English is the language of pop music." When they were growing up, they listened to English and American bands because there was nothing that they liked in French. Rock n' Roll started in English speaking countries, Jazz started in English speaking countries, Disco started in English speaking countries, Hip-Hop started in English speaking countries. For the past 200 years it has been the lingua franca of the world, for better or for worse. Its the same reason masses are written in Latin, and most classical composers worked in French: they were written at times when that was the language of commerce. If you want a mass audience, you work in English.

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

VanillaFire1000: I'm afaraid it's nt availabe on line.
Henrik: yes, that was Catalan for "Thing We Lost in the Fire" (!!). Of course, it's not like that in RDL.
Bill: yes, the language is the most obvious bias for music.
VanillaFire1000: but there's a lot of exciting styles that don't come from English countries and don't get a minimum share of acclaim.

Best books:
1. ROBERTO BOLAÑO “2666” (2004)
2. CORMAC McCARTHY “The Road (La carretera)” (2006, Spanish release 2007)
3. W.G. SEBALD “Austerlitz” (2001, Sp. 2002)
4. AMY HEMPEL “The Collected Stories (Cuentos completos)” (2006, Sp. 2009)
5. RICHARD FORD “The Lay of the Land (Acción de gracias)” (2006, Sp. 2008 )

7. ALICE MUNRO “Runaway (Escapada)” (2004, Sp. 2005)

9. IAN McEWAN “Atonement (Expiación)” (2001, Sp. 2002)

Correct. I checked before updating the spreadsheet.

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

I'm in the middle of 2666. It is...dumbfoundingly fantastic. Ranked among the greatest modern novels easily as far as I'm concerned. I just finished 'The part about Fate' and I'm taking a short break from it reading another book before going to 'The part about the crimes'.

Strange Murakami choice. Kafka On the Shore is a lot better book.

Nice That...

a publication remembered "Music" for its EDL.

I'd like to know what people whose primary language isn't English think.

i remember hearing something somewhere about a dutch tv music program playing nothing but dutch musicians and people complained that it wasn't in english.

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

Rockdelux lists always odd mix for us all to become angry with them. For example, in its review of the 90s, OK Computer not included among the 150 best albums. I thought this year would do the same with Kid A, but no ...

Do not forget to pioneers: Robert Wyatt, Tom Waits, Ry Cooder, Nick Cave, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Lou Reed, Bruce Springsteen, Scott Walker, Bryan Wilson, David Sylvian. Other publications have not remembered them and I think it's good albums.

The issue is precious (the magazine celebrates their 25 birthday) : 200 pages just devoted to reviewing the decade. Very good design and without losing a sense of humor.

Rockdelux has returned to do a great job.

By the way, the spreadsheet of the songs have a little mistake: Since I Left You is number 14 (not 15)

Error fixed.

28.Antony and the Johnsons "I'm a bird Now"

I have discovered an error in the list sent by Paul (and therefore in the spreadsheet). The album by Antony and the Johnsons of Rockdelux # 28 is Antony and the Johnsons (2000) instead of I Am a Bird Now (2005)

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

Now this error is fixed too. Thanks Otis!

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

I was surprised to see only one Radiohead album on the list.

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

To me what surprises me is to see a Radiohead album Rockdelux list. I mean I did not expect any.

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

Is that a critique of Radiohead or Rock de Lux

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

I don't love Radiohead as much as the median AM'ers. That's for sure. Rockdelux has some prejudice, it is true, but I like seeing on the list Robert Wyatt and Tom Waits above Strokes, Arcade Fire or Radiohead. . Some magazine had to remember those great records.

Re: EOD List - Rock de Lux (Spain)

I am not an avid Radiohead fan yet, but their music is growing on me. Even after 10 listens, I can hear something different in some of their songs, such as Creep, that enables me to more deeply appreciate Radiohead's artistry.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could clue me in on some of the reasons you prefer the Robert Wyatt and Tom Waits efforts.

I still have some difficulty appreciating Waits' work, but I presume that is because I don't yet understand it, not because it isn't worth appreciating.

Unfortunately, I am not sufficiently familiar with Wyatt's work to have formed even a nascent opinion.
