Welcome to the 9th part of the '70s acclaimed music forum poll. This month we will deal with 1978, the year where the French audience was mourning the death of Claude François while they should have been crying those of Jacques Brel (well, I guess they were), Keith Moon and Chris Bell.
Please submit at least 5 songs and/or albums, preferably but not necessarily with ranking, lists without ranking will get an average score of 10 points per album. The deadline is midnight on the 31th of October. For the scoring, rules and other details check here
You should have a look at the 1978 album and song lists before voting (but you can of course vote for songs and albums not in the AM list)

As always, here is my list in progress
Only 6 items so far, but the list will grow as I will listen to other albums (known or unknown).
I only list albums I've listened to in the past 2 years.
So I've got to listen to 14 albums at least...
Likely to make my list : Neil Young, Steel Pulse, The Jam, The Police, Marvin, The Band, Big Star, Kraftwerk, and others.
And by the way, Beans : nice number 1
One of the richest years in pop history, dominated by punk / new wave with dazzling stripes of reggae, disco, synth pop / electronic and world psych / grooves. (I assume, Grapevine and Typical Girls by the Slits, which appear in the AM 1978 list, are 1979 songs).

Wow! Sonofsamiam, your Costello choices for the Top 20 are the same that I've planned: "No Action" and "Lipstick Vogue" (but in my list in progress are #9 and #16). I feel really honoured of coinciding with you...
Once again: According to Wikipedia, Allmusic, Discogs, RYM the Slits album "Cut" and the single "Typical Girls" / "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" are released in 1979 (September). What to do?
Speaking of Costello, who will figure quite heavily on my lists for this year - Henrik has "Peace, Love and Understanding" in the 1978 song list. Is this correct, or should it be in 1979?

Costello is one of these acclaimed artists that I just can't take (along with the Smiths, and, to a lesser extent, Joni Mitchell)... I mean I find him barely ok...
Always wondered why. Must be his voice. The cold-blood way he sings. He rarely seems quite involved, I mean emotionnally, and when he is, I like the songs ("I Want you"). The only 1978 song i really like is "There's No Action"
That's the fun of AMF : we all have our blind spots.

Some people (Fred and Mindrocker) are voting for “I Will Survive”, Top Ten of the year for me. Although allmusic and Acclaimedmusic put this song as 1979’s, according to Wikipedia, Rateyourmusic and Discogs it was first released as a B-side of “Substitute” (in an edited version of 3 minutes) the 27th October of 1978 and later as part of the “Love Tracks” album in 27th November of 1978 (with a length of 8 minutes). Due to the success of the B-side (the DJs used to flip the sides) in December 1978 was released as A-side single, climbing to the top of the charts in March of 1979.
1978 then?

FAVOURITE COMPILATION: HANK WILLIAMS "40 Greatest Hits"
Madrid, Madrid, Madrid. The capital of Spain. With a common feature with other important capitals: the arrogance of its inhabitants. Nothing to do with citizens of Buenos Aires or London, in Madrid arrogance is an art. There’s even a specific word for that, chulería (chulo is, depending on the context, cocky, smashing or even pimp) and a specific slang, cheli. No other band exemplified better the behaviour of the chulos madrileños like Burning. Burning came from La Elipa, a working-class neighbourhood, so their chulería came from four ways: they were young, they were working-class, they were rockers and, of course, they were from Madrid. Eduardo Guillot for Rockdelux: "Their story, spattered with death (the singer Toño Martín died on May 9th of 1992 and guitar player Pepe Risi on May 9th of 1997) would demonstrate that their songs talked about close experiences and that their world was not the glamorous one but the world of the dark and smelly backstreets, the dangerous nights, the hostess clubs, the stark sex". Or Antonio Amor for Efe Eme: "They were a product of their time, but they stand quite well the test of time and they’re useful to know how were the rave-ups and the drugs, the loves and the disappointments, how felt and how fucked the common people during the transition" (the writer refers to the Spanish transition to democracy).
After a first album, "Madrid" (1978), displaying their raw stoner sound they received the offer of Fernando Colomo, a filmmaker, to participate in a movie called "¿Qué hace una chica como tú en un sitio como éste?" ("What’s a girl like you doing in a place like this?"). Colomo had already a song written by singer-songwriter Luis Eduardo Aute but Burning wrote and demoed a new song in only a weekend, and when Colomo heard it on Monday he had no doubt, that was the one. The song was released as a single in 1978 and was later included in the album "El fin de la década" ("The End of the Decade", 1979). A rock ballad with influences of the Stones and Lou Reed (the guitars got some echoes of rock ‘n’ roll animals Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner), with some beautiful keyboard parts and with a tempo that I can only qualify as, yes, chulo.
QUÉ HACE UNA CHICA COMO TÚ EN UN SITIO COMO ESTE
Composer: José Casas/Juan Antonio Cifuentes/Antonio Martín/Enrique Pérez/Roberto Oltra
Performer: BURNING
First release: 1978 ("Qué hace una chica como tú en un sitio como éste"single)
Length: 4’06”
¿Qué hace una chica como tú en un sitio como éste?
¿Qué clase de aventura has venido a buscar?
Los años te delatan, nena, estás fuera de tu sitio.
Vas de caza, ¿a quién vas a atrapar?
No utilices tus juegos conmigo.
Mujer fatal, siempre con problemas.
Mujer fatal, siempre con problemas.
¿Qué tienes en los ojos, nena, o es que vas a llorar?
Ya sé que alguien pisó tu orgullo en un oscuro portal.
No intentes atraparme, ya he aprendido a volar.
Mujer fatal, mujer fatal.
Mujer fatal, tú eres fatal.
Mujer fatal, este no es tu sitio.
WHAT’S A GIRL LIKE YOU DOING IN A PLACE LIKE THIS?
What’s a girl like you doing in a place like this?
What kind of affair are you looking for?
Your age betrays you, baby, you don’t belong here.
You came hunting, who you are going to hunt?
Don’t play your games with me.
Femme fatale, always causing troubles.
Femme fatale, always causing troubles.
Is there something in your eyes, baby, or are you going to cry?
I know that someone trampled on your pride on a dark hall.
Don’t try to catch me, I’ve learned to fly.
What’s a girl like you doing in a place like this?
What’s a girl like you doing in a place like this?
What’s a girl like you doing in a place like this?
What’s a girl like you doing in a place like this?
Femme fatale, always causing troubles.
Femme fatale, always causing troubles.
Femme fatale, this is not your place.
Femme fatale, always causing troubles, ha.
Femme fatale, ha.
Femme fatale, always causing troubles.
Femme fatale, you’re fatal.
Femme fatale, this is not your place.
Femme fatale, femme fatale.
Femme fatale, you’re fatal.
Femme fatale, this is not your place.
After really exploring this year, I've decided it's a much deeper year than I had originally believed.

Nassim- Thanks for your response... I certainly will check out the charts from the years you have worked through so far. And yes, I have been able to respond to the currently-running polls.
One other question- It's unfortunate (for me) that I missed all those great years of voting. Is there/will there ever be a way for me to backtrack and get my votes for the completed years to "count"? Or should I just wait for the process to start over again (maybe in 2012)?
Thanks again!

Sorry Nassim but seeing Greg’s movie list I just realized that there’s a song in my all-time list that is really from 1978 and not from 1979 as I thought (Stanlye Myers’ “Cavatina” played by classical guitarist John Williams). So I’m going to change my song list (and I’m going to seize to change another two songs at #40 and #46 that I forgot). Anyway, Nassim, if you don’t include these changes I’m not going to blame you because the deadline was yesterday.
Updated songs list:
1. KRAFTWERK "Das Modell" (#17 in my all-time list)
2. WILLIE COLÓN & RUBÉN BLADES "Pedro Navaja" (#31)
3. BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS "Is This Love" (#37)
4. CHIC "Le Freak" (#70)
5. THE POLICE "Roxanne" (#95)
6. PATTI SMITH GROUP "Because the Night" (#120)
7. GLORIA GAYNOR "I Will Survive" (#147)
8. BLONDIE "Heart of Glass" (#168)
9. JOHN WILLIAMS "Cavatina (Theme From “The Deerhunter”)" (#222)
10. THE CLASH "Stay Free"
11. ELVIS COSTELLO "No Action"
12. DIRE STRAITS "Sultans of Swing"
13. THE ROLLING STONES "Miss You"
14. THE JACKSONS "Blame It to the Boogie"
15. SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES "Hong Kong Garden"
16. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN "Candy's Room"
17. BIG STAR "Holocaust"
18. ELVIS COSTELLO "Lipstick Vogue"
19. JOE JACKSON "Is She Really Going Out With Him?"
20. THE JAM "Down at the Tube Station at Midnight"
21. BUZZCOCKS "Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)?"
22. MAGAZINE "Shot by Both Sides"
23. DEVO "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"
24. THE ROLLING STONES "Respectable"
25. BURNING "Qué hace una chica como tú en un sitio como éste"
26. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN "Racing in the Street"
27. TOM WAITS "Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis"

29. ELVIS COSTELLO "(I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea"
30. SQUEEZE "Take Me I’m Yours"
31. KATE BUSH "Wuthering Heights"
32. BLONDIE "Sunday Girl"
33. TALKING HEADS "Take Me to the River"
34. LOU REED " Street Hassle"
35. BIG STAR "Kanga Roo"
36. BRIAN ENO "1/1"
37. KRAFTWERK "Die Roboter"
38. BILLY JOEL "My Life"
39. THE DOOBIE BROTHERS "Minute by Minute"
40. FRANKIE VALLI "Grease"
41. MARVIN GAYE "When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You"
42. EARTH, WIND & FIRE "September"
43. FUNKADELIC "One Nation Under a Groove"
44. WILLIE COLÓN & RUBÉN BLADES "Plástico"
45. MORIS "Nocturno de Princesa"

47. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN "Badlands"
48. THE UNDERTONES "Teenage Kicks"
49. THE CLASH "White Man in Hammersmith Palace"
50. THE JAM "English Rose"
And here are the results :
Albums :
1 - Elvis Costello - This Year's Model
2 - Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town
3 - Blondie - Parallel Lines
4 - Funkadelic - One Nation Under a Groove
5 - Jam, The - All Mod Cons
6 - Big Star - Third Album/Sister Lovers
7 - Talking Heads - More Songs About Buildings and Food
8 - Rolling Stones, The - Some Girls
9 - Kraftwerk - Die Mensch Maschine
10 - Cars, The - The Cars
As we could have expected, the top 3 took an early lead which they kept until the end. The rest of the top was very different after the first half of the votes but in a terrible turn of event, late support made Some Girls rocket in the top 10 and kick Chairs Missing out of the winning list. Seems like I should have voted...
The real loser of the second half of the votes however is Pere Ubu which spent quite a long time with 2 albums in the top 10 to finally end with none.
Songs :
1 - Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen in Love?
2 - Clash, The - White Man (In Hammersmith Palais)
3 - Blondie - Heart of Glass
4 - Undertones, The - Teenage Kicks
5 - Wire - Outdoor Miner
6 - Only Ones, The - Another Girl, Another Planet
7 - Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights
8 - Funkadelic - One Nation Under a Groove
9 - Kraftwerk - Das Modell
10 - Rolling Stones, The - Miss You
The presence of Outdoor Miner on the list is a slight compensation for the elimination of Chairs Missing. Is This Love and Sultans of Swing got more votes than 4 songs of the top 10, but the heavy support for Another Girl, Another Planet & co made the difference.
And 2 of my top 10 songs of the decade are out...
Yeah, how can you have a 1978 list with such little post-punk? Oh well.
At least 79 will allow us to add Unknown Pleasures and Entertainment! Post-punk wont be completely ignored.
Real happy for Funkadelic to make the lists and The Cars, but no songs from The Cars or Elvis Costello? For shame AM.
