Father columbanus’s unit took a real pounding somewhere in Holland / Belgium on New Year’s Eve time 1944/45
He returned having being away & found a number of his pals dead or wounded - after the war back in Dublin - he kept thinking of why he was spared in the conflict & particularly after that close one
So - he grabbed a new uniform & became a capuchin monk spending much of his later years in a monastery in Waterford
I saw him interviewed on telly as he crossed to Normandy on one of the big anniversaries- the 50th I think - where HR herself & Prince Philip made a bee line for him in Portsmouth where he was with other DDay veterans
Never got chance to meet him but he sparked an interest in me about southern itish volunteers in WW2
Next year I hope I can find where his unit was based during the Normandy campaign

I'm quite sure this would have been done frequently for British riders. It is written that one batch was fitted with Norton 16H bars.....God knows how that worked??
The myth that the left side throttle was so that a police officer could use a pistol whilst in hot pursuit is Boll*cks
