Different Sprocket?

Hi,

Finally got around to take the magdyno out for refurb. As I feared the bolts were in the wrong way, and I had to get de primary drivecase off.
Now everything is open, I wonder if I should change the sprocket for a smoother ride. The front sprocket has only 17 teeth. Seems a bit small. Perhaps Side car set up?

Amy thoughts or tips.

Cheers

John

Re: Different Sprocket?

Yep, sorry. It’s a 1943 Norton 16H

Re: Different Sprocket?

The standard WD16H engine sprocket was 18t so it does seem that yours has been geared for a sidecar. The WD rear drum had 43t rather than the pre-war 42t so that will lower the gearing a little too. In service use, there was a compression plate and low octane fuel.

Pre-war tended to be 20t engine across the range with 42t at the rear wheel.

Depending on how hilly your normal runs are and weight carried (solo or pillion) and an engine in good condition, it's quite likely that the bike will pull a 19t happily. Perhaps try 20 if you do a lot of main roads. You'll probably need first gear more often then, with the large gap between first and second making it less enjoyable to ride.

Odd numbers on the front do tend to mean a cranked joining link.

Re: Different Sprocket?

Thanks, so a 19t would be the right way to go for the flat Dutch roads? Any advice where to get a sprocket and chain?
