Wit's end: concentrics pilot cleanout

Not WD related but I'm desperate. Does anyone have a way of cleaning the pilot jet passages of mark 1 concentric carbs other than the "#78 drill bit" or carb cleaner spray methods I've seen on the web? Specifically this is for a 72 A75 and the carb assembly is off the engine but I would prefer not to separate the carbs from the mounting, if possible.

Ultrasonic cleaning. A suitable size cleaner is reasonably cheap and used with the correct cleaning fluid from a good supplier like Allendale does work although you may need several sessions to get best results. You can get "specialists" to do it for you but my experience is that they don't have the patience to keep repeating the process or use the wrong fluid or only work to cosmetic standards.

Thank you. Great idea. I'm trying to do it without taking the carbs off the mounting because that usually needs re-synchronizing when reassembling but if nothing else works I'll definitely try this. I already have the machine!

Re: Wit's end: concentrics pilot cleanout

Aloha,

I did all of the things mentioned above with the Concentrics on my Bonneville, more than one time. It wouldn't run at idle on both carbs and I finally settled on that they were probably worn out. When spraying with carb cleaner I could se that the mist up the intake was somewhat different between the two of them, no cleaning would fix it.

Bought i new pair of Wassel-copies and the bike fired right up on first kick and idled smoothly. So that's my tip for cleaning... :grinning:

Best regards,

Simon

Thank you all but I'm not ready to admit defeat. I will post if I find a workable solution short of replacement.

Re: Wit's end: concentrics pilot cleanout

I love the Concentric, but it is perhaps not the most durable design. Mine was of the first model year (1968) with screw in pilot jets, so I guess they did serve well for a long time.

Best regards,

Simon

It may be worth searching the internet for Bushman's Carb Tuning Secrets published by Jim Bush in November 2017. It's available as a PDF.

What Steve C.said. Bushman article very well written with great photos. Used it several times in straightening out the carb issues on my Triumphs.
