I need to purchase a 8" Lucas DU142 headlamp. Are the ones made in India any good? Is India my only option or does someone in Europe make them? I see the ones made in India on Ebay from $107 up to $250 for the same headlight. Is the $250 one better as it looks the same?
It will be used on a 1936 Triumph and I want the best one I can get.
I took a chance on one for one of my Royal Enfield's and was extremely impressed with the quality of the tin ware. It's almost as though they have original tooling??
First of all I wanted to put a proper switch and ammeter in it with an original switch panel, but the 3 tapped holes were slightly out of line, so I had to use their panel. I replaced the reflector and glass with proper period items, and know one would tell the difference.
Eventually a friend in South Africa sent me an original DU 142 shell, so I fitted that....Just so I had an original.
Also the one on my BSA/Indian special is from India (Fitted up with original parts and is still on the bike. Ron
Same broadly positive experience here. Shell quality good. I fitted a 30s brass rim and glass to mine, no problem.Same difficulty with top panel,so used the Indian copy. Worth a punt.
