Apologies if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find anything on the forum covering my question.

Question: What was the original finish on the dynamo's - E3H, E3L, E3HM etc? Were they plated or painted?

I'm pretty sure they were plated, but with what?

Appreciate any feedback.

Originally Cadmium plated. The best that lots of us can get nowadays is zinc plated (Silver passivate) It's generally a bit shinier than Cad, but a coat of petrol proof matt clear lacquer will take care of that and also help to protect the surface. Ron

I may be able to get cad plating down here - but quite difficult to find. I think a few blokes may still do it.
Otherwise I'll go with the zinc as you suggest.

Not sure about WD dynamos but civvy ones were dull nickel plated...Ian

Yes I think you're right Ian. I'd forgotten that. Sorry Bruce...New instructions for your plater. But again Dull nickel, is something not many plate shops will achieve!!

Contrary to popular belief, Cad plating is not (yet) banned in this country. But because of the stringent regulations, Mostly only firms with MOD, aviation or Government contracts will bother with it. Ron
