Hi all
I am rebuilding another box here for someone & after tearing it down last night - found that the fixed gears on both shafts were removeable by hand
This would go some way to explain the very worn selector forks & sliding clutch dogs
So
I realise that the easiest solution is to replace both fixed gears & shafts - splines on the shaft are shiny due to the gear movement on them that I can see
However
Has anyone here reused such gears & shafts using a bearing fixing solution / loctite with success
Or
Just fitted new gears in the hope that the unworn splines on the new gears take up the slack on the main shaft section & be tight enough to function & be reliable
I am trying to make the build economically sensible for this guy but if needs be - I will go down the route of new parts to ensure a first time fix & a longterm reliable gearbox repair
Be interested in hearing about first hand experiences here before I proceed

I have this in my "gearbox notes" which I am pretty sure came from Ian originally
"The fixed gears must be a good press-fit onto their splines
If loose, they may be located using Loctite 648 retaining fit (green) with some success. Apply the Loctite to the inside of the gear..NOT the shaft, before refitting otherwise it may be pushed towards the bushed gear and cause it to lock."

Yes, I've used Loctite on a number of occassions as a cure for this...If the gears are a sliding fit by hand but do not have free play radially it's a fix...If the gears have some free pay radially I'd consider replacement of one part to reduce/eliminate this effect before using loctite or replace both parts if it's bad...Ian
Yes, loctite does work. But as M20 gearboxes are so common and where I live relatively cheap, I would replace the bad parts. I was able to get a very good condition M20 gearbox as I needed the shifting forks for only $40.

They are a lot more than that in the UK unfortunately...It must be 20 years at least since I could get one for the equivalent of $40...:smile: It would be £150 to £200 now... Ian
