I recently bought a alleged G3l. Having spent the last 50 years of my life rising Japanese and Italian bikes, British bikes are new toe.
My question is...
My Frame number under the seat by the battery is 38338, but I have found a number stamped on the headrace that is 807305 ( this is the one the v5,c states. Have I bought a wrong un??? It was bought from a dealer Blighty Militaria.
Any help would be much appreciated.

The frame number is stamped into the frame,on the right hand side under the saddle. People assume the number on the head stock is the frame number, this is not the frame number but a casting or component number
Bike should be from contract C12632, started late 1941, but probably produced in 1942.
Doesn't help Matchless used the same numbers again for civilian production after the war, but pictures would help, I will see if I have more info on this bike.
To be a bit more precise: any number between 4841290 and 4841340 would have been possible. Just pick a number within this range, your guess is as good as mine...
Jan, the numbers you mention are not the official contract C number ranges, I can follow your thought, but then the whole O&M book should be rewritten.
