could any body shed some light on the census number of my Matchless 1941. frame 24521 contract 11462 possibly an RN contract ?
and if it was An RN contract what colour would it be..

The Census numbers for this contract are all over the place, I have frame number 24522 on file, and that had the C number C4651071, but frame number 24518 had C4651146 on the tank, maybe bikes at random were pulled for RN service??
Note, these C numbers I mentioned are really C9841 contract numbers, the previous contract!! and that is a uncalculatable contract anyway.
Not my frame number Geoff, most of my data comes from old army records that I acquired years ago, but when it has a C number from the factory, it's unlikely to have been used by the RN.
I would use C4651070 (one digit less), then in theory it could have been right.
I don't know where Jan got the C11462 information from. I couldn't find any reference in the Ministry of Supply ledgers, but they didn't order all Air Ministry and Admiralty initially.

O&M don't tell us which Service this contract went to. It wasn't an Army contract, as Army contracts are well documented and we can't find it anywhere in the Army records. So it must have been either RAF or RN. On HMVF I have been studying these RAF and RN contracts for almost a year now, and have come to the conclusion that C/11462 must have been a Royal Navy contract, with census numbers close to 10000RN. Unlike most (not all, as Lex already pointed out) Army contracts, RN census numbers can't be calculated based on the frame number. So the exact census number of Geoff's bike will forever be a mystery, but any number close to 10000RN would be correct for that contract.
