Just in case you have been wondering as to what I've been developing for my M20. I finally have a completed oil pump.
I was hoping to do about a dozen in this batch, but one or two manufacturing issues have been highlighted. Nothing big, but annoying all the same.
I'm not going to make up test rigs or any thing like that, it's just a circulating pump.
The horrible ones that used to be on sale worked well enough, I've done nearly 3000 miles on one.
This one I hope to fit and test ride this weekend.
Just the sort of rubbish you'd expect from me Ian.
Cast iron body and caps.
Top and body dowelled.
Top and body line honed.
Tradional steel gears hardened and tempered.
Not for forgetting the 1/4" ball and clip.
As it's had more work put into it, it's priced just above what others have been selling for.
I expect with each batch improvements will take place.
Thanks Mark..You shouldn't say...'I expect with each batch improvements will take place'..You'll have me waiting and not buying:smile: ....Let me have a price inc. VAT & shipping when you have that and the pumps are available...Ian
I assembled another one this morning, I might be able to get another half dozen out of the parts I have.
I'll fit one this afternoon and see how I get on doing about 100 miles in the rain tomorrow.
It would have been nice if you had made the oil pumps before I bought four of the Wassell pumps!
Anyway the Wassell pumps have been working great with no issues at all. But they are not perfect as they were made to a price. They claim the body is cast iron but looks like mild steel to me and the ends of the pumps are definitely not cast iron. The gear teeth are not are hard as I think they should be as they measured at Rockwell C scale 30.
I did nearly 3000 miles on a wassell pump as I didn't get around to finish my pumps.
They were started around 10 years ago and were made with aluminium bronze body parts.
No interest in them what so ever!
When I saw how poorly the wassell ones were made, it motivated me again.
As with many parts I use the material and heat treatment from BSA drawings of similar parts.
I's not always correct, but a good place to start.
Apart from having to rebuild ever wassell pump I sold, they were an easy option.
My pumps are not user servicable, and you should never want too.
