WM20 brigade insignia

Hi all,

I would like to add Brigade insignia on my 1943, WM20 painted Brown Service.
I wanted to add the Mailed Fist of 6th Armoured Brigade on one side, what are my options for the AoS Markings on the other side?

Also, which side is the proper one for the Brigade Insignia and which one for the AoS markings?

Best
Dan

Re: WM20 brigade insignia

6th Guards Armored Brigade
9/15/41 - Formed in the UK by the conversion of the 30th Independent (Guards)
Infantry Brigade.
1/15/43 - Redesignated and reorganized as the 6th Guards Tank
Brigade.
2/2/45 - Reformed by redesignation and reorganization of 6th
Guard Tank Brigade as an Armored Brigade, Type "A".
6/17/45 - Redesignated as 6th Guards Regiment.

Assigned Units
4th Armored Grenadier Guards 9/15/41-1/14/43
2/2/45-6/16/45
3rd Armored Scots Guards 9/15/41-1/14/43
2/2/45-6/16/45
2nd Armored Wels Guards 9/15/41-1/11/43
4th Armored Coldstream Guards 2/2/45-6/16/45
4th Motorized Coldstream Guards 9/15/41-1/14/43

According to Army Council Instructions, from January 1941 onwards, "Formation Signs" were not to be applied to motorcycles. Prior to this, they were applied to the (U.K.) "offside" with Arm of Service sign on the nearside. From 1941 onwards, the Arm of service sign comprising serial on a coloured background was applied to both sides of the fuel tank. It's necessary to decide on the exact unit within the brigade to identify the actual serial and colour used.

I've been experiencing difficulty posting images so I'll try some alternatives.

Rik did you get your N/S and O/S mixed up? If not I'm in trouble!!Ron

Re: WM20 brigade insignia

Ron, I don't think I'm wrong on 1939 - 1940 motorcycles as they had the Serial / census number on the nearside. Arm of service and formation sign were sometimes on the mudguard during that period too though.

From 1941 onwards, any formation sign was contrary to ACIs or hadn't been overpainted so it's owner's choice really.

OK Rik. I studied pictures and documentation very carefully before I started marking anything. Overwhelmingly the formation/Div sign is on the N/S which is also confirmed by the document you posted.

I agree that the Div sign's were supposed to be deleted, but old Hans Muller well remembered the Polar Bears on the 49th Div vehicles and bikes, during the liberation of the Netherlands..... That might have had something to do with them being proud of their "NOW" roaring bear instead of the placid bear they had previously.

Also there is always "Artistic Licence" Ron.

Not as bad as 30 Corps..In Italy their rampant wild bore had its todger removed for fear of causing offence in a Catholic country....Ian:grin:

Let's see who is offended. Ron

So I guess the right thing is to go both sides with the AoS.
But is something like that acceptable?
Is the black square with 40 for the armoured division hq correct?

Re: WM20 brigade insignia

Yes 40 on black is correct for HQ. Ron

Re: WM20 brigade insignia

I've just realised that you're referring to 6th Armoured Division, and not 6th (Guards) Tank Brigade which was an independent brigade in NW Europe.

The chart that Ron has posted shows your possibilites within an armoured division. "40" denotes HQ
