On the way to a New Zealand motorcycle rally the nut came off the magneto cog. I have pulled off the side cover and found the nut can someone tell me with very basic tools how do the timing close enough to get me home about 150 km
Well it's a SV so I guess there is a timing plug in the head to remove? With a piece of wire/drinking straw on top of the piston, you need to get the piston at TDC compression stroke (Both valves closed) Now mark the straw at that position. I don't know what the timing BTDC is, but I would guess at somewhere between 10-12mm? Now mark the straw above that mark at that measurement and drop the piston backwards to that line. With the handlebar control at full advance, now turn the points in their direction of rotation till the points just part. (Traditionally till a fag paper is released). Now lock the timing pinion nut up.
Hopefully you will get home and check it properly according to the manual. Ron
