Weird Starting issue on my 1942 M20

So it is all original war era setup. Was running and starting fine. Then last night it started to act like it was slipping and just give a slip/grind noise when I would try and start it. TThe kick starter works great when you hold the decompression switch. but when you go to kick her to start it just doe tthat grind slip noise. The main gear box looks good inside and everything. So not sure at all what is going on as the ratchet was good adn tight too. Any advise or help would be amazing as I will be honest it is definately out of my wheel house working on this.

Sounds to me like your cush drive nut has come loose? (The nut that holds your engine sprocket).
The manual says, "Assemble the gearbox in Top Gear" Ron
