The Amal handlebar controls for a W/NG are quite unique. The banjo levers on the clutch side are double piggy back and are marked MAG and EXH. the choke lever is marked AIR and the grips are extra long. Ron
That's exactly as it should be Ian (part of the uniqueness) The mag lever is actually tight wire, which complies with all the others except Royal Enfield. Although you have to push it away rather than pull it towards you. Ron
The other quite unique feature about these Ariel's, is the handlebar is 1" tapering to 7/8" for the controls?? Both for the early rubber mounted bar and the later clamp type. When the last bikes were fitted with the standardised 7/8" handlebar, special shells were provided to reduce the 1" clamps.
An old picture before I replaced the cables and the slot head pivot screws. Ron
My 44 wng is 2nd bike off the line in its contract - first to be fitted with standardised levers
As Ron pointed out / my bars have shells fitted to close the gap on the 1” handlebar clamp
As you say, it's a lovely bike to ride. Personally I find the advance lever very natural - you push it away with your thumb as you accelerate.
Can anyone clarify the length of the grips for me? My bike is early '42, largely untouched - original factory engine & gearbox numbers, unusual for a military bike. That year brought the change away from rubber parts - for example by July the factory were specifying leather tank mounts.
My question is, given that I think it should be wearing rubber grips, would they be the long pattern?
Simon here are the canvas grip sizes. If you contact Jeff the rubber man on jeffalanhunter@aol.com He might be able to confirm the rubber grip sizes. Also, if you've got the correct levers in bright chrome, you can get them lightly blasted with medium aluminium oxide grit to make them dull. For instance I did this bright chrome Norton exhaust from Armours in my own cabinet and several other small parts over the years. Good luck. Ron
Bless you my son:latin_cross: Rik on the ibb site, from the "Embed Codes" drop down menu. I'm now using "BBCode Full" .....I got banned as well but this still works for me. Ron
I wish it were that easy, Ron but all I get (up to now) is a clickable link and no actual image. Anyway, here is an attempt to show that Ariel appear to have been continuing their pre-war lever practice. This is BBCode full linked. Fingers crossed.
