These two photos are of the same bike, came with some other photos with a New Zealand connection taken in Palestine area, has an extension to the silencr fitted, part of the head lamp appears to have a dark shade of paint ,while the rest of the bike is painted a sandy desert colour.
Indeed, machine details and style of registration number confirm this to be an India Office contract machine. Still to 1937 pattern, but issued a 1938 registration on arrival with the army in India. Likely to have been delivered in bronze green, so overpainted in theatre.
It seems that the Indian Army (which included the British Army units in India took substantial transport with them when posted to the Middle East
Definitely India Office as stated before.
Strangely there is no pillion equipment on any of the pictures I have (from memory) although they were supposedly ordered with it.
The extended rear carrier was specific to IO in order to facilitate the pillion seat.
By the time the British army ordered pillion equipment they also sported the pannier equipment so they never had this configuration.
The Vokes Protectomotor air cleaner was also fitted to the first 2 British army contracts.
Maybe a useful picture to add to the book I am working on. I assume that would be OK.
I finally started on the project seriously as my days are running out. Rob van Meel will be co-author and publisher.
I am compiling a book on the military Norton based on the 30 years of looking for info and the help of and discussions with many people and work on my website. It will give the most complete account of present knowledge and contain loads of information on the 16H and Big 4.
First edition will hopefully be available before the end of this year.
Keep a look out on my website www.wdnorton.nl
Hi Rob, yes feel free to use the images, do you need any more photo images, I've got some nice Norton photos/postcards never been shown before,I can email them directly to you if you're interested.
I was on holiday and in the weekend at Kempton and Stanford Hall, hence my late reply.
I am always interested in good Norton pictures so I would be pleased if you can send what you have/want to share.
I am nearing my end of the work but if there is a better picture to add it would be nice.
