Re: Girder spring fitting

Hi Arnold.
The fork spring action is separate to the steering head bearing setup so I don't think the spring action would affect things.
But it is unweildy, flopping around as you try to feed the fork steering head through all those ball bearings.
What I did last time was to strip the forks down, fitting the steering head & then attaching the spring, links & main girder. Put a layer of grease around the balls to retain them in their races.

Re: Girder spring fitting

I'd never attempt to fit girders without fitting the steering stem in place first. Then start with the lower links, then get the top of the spring in place and finally the top links. Ron

Re: Girder spring fitting

Hi all,

Just at the same stage: fitting girders to my empty frame. I've got them on, but the spring is touching the bottom of the steering head and the top crossmember of the girder. Is this because the forks aren't under load or have I screwed up somehow? 😳

Re: Girder spring fitting

That usually happens till the weight of the bike levels things out. I put pieces of cardboard behind the spring to protect the paint which will fall out once under load. Ron

Re: Girder spring fitting

Thanks Ron; that's reassuring. Another lesson learned...

My regards,

Craig
