Hello,
Is the dating service still active?
I'm willing to donate to the site because it is an amazing resource and it's worth donating to to keep it going.
Thanks
Andy
Perhaps you might want to change the title of your post? When reading 'dating service' many of us are likely to assume this is spam of the kind this site suffered from a while back. 'Dating' there meant being put in touch with others for dates.
I know that there are people on this site who most generously will give details of your bike if you supply the engine and frame numbers, and possibly a better title might therefore be 'need help with year of my bike....'?
Jan,
I recently acquired a MW20 at a meet.
The frame number is:
WM20 82293
The number on the left side case is:
WM20 50236
With another number below it:
81740, with the 1 being inverted.
From the research I have done on this site, I believe the frame to be in the 1942-year range, and the motor 1941 possibly.
Any information would be appreciated.
All classic/vintage machines have a history and stories that if they could talk would be the stuff of a feature film. (for those of us that appreciate history)
Thank you for your comments, interest and time for this.
I'll have a look this afternoon. Any chance of a picture of these numbers / the complete bike? You can send these to my email address if posting here doesn't work out...
The frame with number WM20.82293 was made under contract S/1048. This was a contract for 15.000 bikes, with frame numbers 81818 - 96817, and census numbers C5115218 - C5130217. Frame number 82293 would have been issued with census number C5115693.
The factory ledgers for frame numbers higher than 70000 no longer exist, but we know from the Receipt Cards that the first bikes from this contract arrived at Chilwell in early June 1943. Production was expected at 2.000 bikes per month. This means that your frame must also have left the factory in June 1943.
Your frame number is not listed in the post war Key Cards, which means that it demobbed before 1949.
I found two pictures with very close census numbers. Both taken during the Liberation of Holland in 1945:
The engine with duplicated frame number WM20.50236 was made under contract C/9310. This was a contract for 9.000 bikes, with frame numbers 44213 - 53212, and census numbers C4553722 - C4562721. The bike with frame number 50236 would have been issued with census number C4559745.
In the factory ledgers we can see that the bike with frame number 50236 was despatched from the factory on December 1st 1941, destination "Ministry of Supply, London".
And I found this picture with a close census number. Also taken during the Liberation of Holland in 1945:
