Hope you have had a great festive period. Started bike after a hiatus of several months and once going, very thick white smoke out of the exhaust and oil spurting from the air release pipe and also dripping out of the chain case. i appreciate the gasket on the chain case may have dried off and shrunk, but why the oil from the air release and smoke?
any help appreciated.
thanks
Chris
It sounds like your bike (M20?) has 'wet sumped' while standing...Most of them will do this if left without running for a while...Oil from the tank drains through the oil pump to the crankcase...When the engine is started there is too much oil in the crankcase for the piston rings to cope with, thus the white smoke...Surplus oil will also escape from the engine any way it can..For example, the exhaust, the crankcase breather, into the primary chaincase....
The solution is to drain the crankcase via the drain plug in the bottom of the engine...Also drain the primary case....Refill the primary to the correct level and check and top up, if required, the engine oil...You'll then be good to go..Any residual oil will be cleared once the engine is running and everything will return to normal....Ian
Remove anti wet sumping valve and clean seat etc to reduce chances of a repeat but if it becomes a persistent problem you can fit an external anti-wet sumping valve. Easy to fit and available on ebay.
