Drive side bearing

Hello everyone,

I'm currently replacing the bearings on the crankshaft of my BSA M20.

I want to replace the outer drive side roller bearing with with a sealed bearing leaving only the outer seal in place.

Original there is a thin metal ring between the cranckcase and this bearing wich I assume is the to reduce oil getting from the bearing into the primary case.

Should I still place this metal ring now I am placing the new bearing with the seal on it or should I ditch this metal ring because there allready is a rubber seal on the bearing itself?

What is your advice any help on this would be much appreciated.

Re: Drive side bearing

You need to keep the steel shield in place as it act's as a spacer.
I have found the bearing lasts long if you keep the seals in place.

Re: Drive side bearing

Thank you Mark and Ian for your quick reply.

@ Mark. I will defenitly keep the ring in place as a spacer then.

@ Ian. The bearings that where in the engine must have been in there for atleast many thousands of miles. It never had a sealed bearing in it and that worked well.

Now that I have the engine apart there is a chance to improve with a sealed bearing even tho it seems not nessesary.

I've read the posts on here discussing the seal and there seams to be no definite answer on leaving both seals in place or taking the inner seal out.

I have think I will go for the option with only the outer seal in place. So oil will get to the bearing easier.

But as I stated the bearing that was in there had no seal at al and that worked fine asswell.

Thanks again,
Giel
