Guidance needed on how to take an oil tell-tale apart. It's the timing cover mounted type.

I understand from a previous thread that it's all from the button end. But how to remove it?

Simply pull the black button out..with some force off course

I restored one for a friend some years ago, it's not difficult, Roy supplied me with a new diaphragm, and still works like a charm.
