Hello all. You may have heard of Classic Transfers, I'm looking to create a WD transfer section on our website. I'll list sets for most models here and some individual decals. I'll link below. If anyone knows of any original decals that we do not have, please comment with pictures and dimensions and we will look to add to the range. Also you will notice we are still in the process of creating the sets. Only BSA are on there right now but i'm working my way through the marques.
Adam, I'm sure that you'll find owners on here happy to help. Classic Transfers has been the preferred source for many of us going back to the days when Bob and Marcia were advising and selling at shows.
You may well find a robust discussion of WD Serial / Census No. styles. There was quite a progression after the application transferred from the Corps depots and each factory had their own house style.
You might remember me, in the past I supplied scans and drawings of the various WD transfers, and I send out this collation from your website about the WD Matchless bikes to people a fair bit every year.
There are some notes though.
The 6027 "RESERVE" transfer might be postwar
The 6288 Matchless for the rear mudguard really needs to be re-drawn, the font on the bottom is not good.
Then 6292 might have not been used at all on WD bikes.
Another thing for WD Nortons, the colour of the gold used on the tank transfers is wrong, this should be a different kind of gold, everybody would love it if you could change that!!! (there is Pale gold and Rich gold), I can send you pictures of my original tank, with original transfers, it's just too bronze coloured now.
Regarding Golds, please email me some pictures, we have lots of gold colours we can work with in vinyl, slighly more limited with the waterslide stock. If you have a picture of the matchless that would be good. I have been meaning to look over this artwork and maybe on the next batch we can change.
The Royal Enfield factory never put TP markings on the WD bikes. No factory ever did. But they can (rarely) be seen on war time photographs. Style and size vary, definitely not original...
Jan i have 7891LC noted for rear mudguards of RE models, was it used on all of them. Also some don't have the Royal Enfield Blocks, but the two tier design. Do you know which colour they were?

Adam, have not seen that anywhere? do you mean the Flea? that is usually the RE.
The original Norton transfers were of course of the 'size' fixing variety.
These are old waterslides obtained from Bob Derrick sometime prior to 2010. I'm quite pleased with the colour match to the original tank that I had in my custody at the time. Has there been a colour change to the more recent production ?
Rik, they were varnish transfers, as was in swing during the 40's and 50's, I worked in the transfer printing industry for years, and know all the procedures, and how to apply them.
Adam, you might also want to mention the instructions, to apply the transfers to a glossy surface, as they will fall off of a matte surface, I can write down instructions as how to exactly do this.
Lex, "size" is an old fashioned name for glue. Pre-war instructions refer to the use of "gold size" which was the quick-drying varnish used for applying Gold leaf.
I feel that the presently available Norton transfers/stickers are slightly too flat in colour.
I would expect a slightly brighter colour as can be seen on the pictures of Lex.
I do not think that would have changed much over the years they were used.
In the Norton admininstration the petrol tank is specified as "Standard size Flat Bottom Green with Gold Transfers"
In my opinion this refers to "yellow gold" as that is what is generally envisioned when discussing e.g. golden jewelry.
It might have another name in the field of printing, that i do not know.
There were only three types of transfers on military Nortons after 1938 being the tank in gold, the primary chain case in gold and on the rear mudguard bottom portion, gold with black lining, as Lex already stated.
In 1936/1937 there appears to have been a white transfer with an oil level indication on the oil tank.
I have tried to reproduce this text but have not yet tried to have this made.
If wanted, please contact me on my email adress.
I will send example of text on oil tank to classic transfers.
What I cannot say for certain is whether this was a white or a golden text.
I have not seen an original oil tank with this text on it but it contrasts quite well with the basic colour of the machines which are mostly glossy and thus the pre-war Dark Bronze Green.
I do have one picture of 1938, after the introduction of the KG3 where the text is also visible.
I have only seen it on 16H machines, with the exeption of the prototype Big 4 (JMK783) still in DBG and possibly fitted with a 16H oil tank by the shape of it but not on a Big 4 in KG3 with the bigger oil tank.
It can also be seen on the 1935 evaluation machine which was still in civilian colours so it may have had a civilian use as well.
Being applied on the black lining it contrasts fairly well and as civilian machines did not have golden logo's I would think it was a white text but proof is not available.
Post war civilian machines did have an oil level indication in white but with a different design.
There is a description of application of transfers on www.wdnorton.nl.
I can see the difference in gold. We work with Pantone Colours and have found pantone gold 871C to be a commonly used colour match for a lot of our waterslide transfers. Issue we have with changing the Norton is we would need to fill an A4 sheet and print 200 sheets. So need other designs of the same colour match It's become quite epensive over the last several years.
I know what you mean about matt paint, waterslides only like a smooth glossy surface. How do you counter this?
Royal Enfield WD models are may next sets to add to the range hopefully today. As discussed not sure if a gold Royal Enfield did go on the rear mudguard. I am also redesiging the C numbers to match RE models. I know someone else makes them but i don't think they are UK based.
I have seen an image ofa WD/Co Royal Navy /Army with a design similar to 6427 etc. Cannot tell from black and white photo whether it was a single colour or had an outline. Does anyone know the colour(s) used? I would attach an image but i'm not sure how to on this forum?

The pre war tank logo transfers can indeed be seen on some war time photographs. They were indeed used on the 6 (six!) Model J2 bikes for the RAF, and on the (one!) RN Model G publicity bike:
Production RN Model G motorcycles used the same transfer as the WD/C and WD/CO:
This transfer (used on 7 bikes in total) was gold with black outline by the way... 😊

Thanks Jan,
So question is, what colour was the logo? it does appear to ahve the outline.

In 2019 I have made CAD drawings of the Royal Enfield census numbers. For as far as I know, Enfields were the only ones to use waterslides (Ariel and Matchless used stencils, BSA and Norton used signwriting). At that time I asked Classic Transfers for the possibility of making sets, but this didn't come cheap... If there is a chance to have waterslides for a fair price I'll send you the CAD drawings!

I Can fit it onto a white printing of ours and perhaps charge similar to our vinyl and paintmask alternatives. I won't be doing a white printing until after christmas, I plan to offer vinyl/paintmask as an option for now in the meantime. Only letter i'm stuggling with is No 3.

Sorry Adam, vinyl census numbers are definitely a no-go! If you will be making Royal Enfield waterslide census numbers, you can have my CAD drawings!

I'll offer just as paintmask for now then until i do a printing. What numbers are used? If it's not every single nummber then i should be able to do a printing quite easily.
Hi, will take a closer look at the original Triumph petrol tank, and take some measurements, I think all the instructions on the transfer are in the rider handbooks, the steering damper knob was deleted on later models, so could be two versions, also there is no oil tank drain and refill transfers available for this model.

hmm so are you saying it's not worth putting a set together for this one? Or maybe we just specify that it was only found on 7 bikes?
Regarding the Welbike transfers, they are basically all wrong and had sent Bob a lot of pictures to rectify the situation, I have never bought any, as I'd rather go without, than apply the wrong ones.
Have found a good solution to applying your (and others) transfers to the very matte paint on the military bikes, it takes more time and effort, but certainly worth it.
Will write it all down, and illustrate with pictures, but it will take some time.
