This tool box is for sale on ebay, dont know what model its off but not BSA,MATCHLESS,NORTON or TRIUMPH,so could be ARIEL or ROYAL ENFIELD,the six figure number is odd in that there is no frame model prefix number?
Interesting Steve! I'm pretty sure that this is indeed a WD/CO right hand side toolbox. But all the Army WD/CO motorcycles were sold off by the Army from November 1945 onwards. I'm pretty sure that none of them were kept by the post war British Army. So if all the WD/COs were sold on the civilian market in the late 1940's, how can this one have been overhauled in a military workshop in the early 1950's...?
The interesting fact about this toolbox is that it has been painted RAF blue before the data plated was added. There's not a lot of information available about RAF vehicles (and that's even a euphemism!), so I wonder if the RAF may have kept a few WD/COs for post war use? That could also explain the rather unusual code on this plate. I don't know if you've already seen the Rebuild Identification Thread that I made on HMVF? F.V.3/R data plates were used up until 1949 (approximately). And the rebuild date should only contain a date, in this case it says 728127 12.6.51. In my opinion this may be explained by a post war career in the RAF...?
Hi Jan,could it be from one of these NFS/AFS bikes which appear to be blue/grey painted, also has what appears to be a six figure number on the front mudguard.
Rebuild data tag is now back on ebay, item no 235835605925, now separated from the toolbox, which is also listed on ebay, seller seems to think it's off an Ariel WNG.
