Kick lever locks up

Hello All,Here is my worry: after 4 to 5 kicks the lever locks in its upper position, no way to drive it down unless I engage a gear, move the bike back and forth than it works again for a few kicks. Quadrant, pignon, rubber stop are new and ok but the gear change mechanism has some play - pawl carriers kind of wobble - and I wonder if the lower gear change pawl does not interfer with the kick pignon. Did anyone experience the same issue and what is the fix? Many thanks for your answers.

Re: Kick lever locks up

A common problem not just on M20's but pretty much any British bike. The two gears are jamming together when the tips of both gear teeth contact instead of the teeth meshing together. When you turn the main shaft you have moved the gear teeth away from each other and now you can kick the motor over.

One or both of the kick start gears are worn and should be replaced. Most of the time the first tooth on the kick start shaft gear will be worn and you can sometimes grind it down a little bit and fix the problem.

Luckily you don't have a BSA unit single where when this happens and you try to kick it harder, the main shaft gear breaks or the kick start shaft will shear off.

Re: Kick lever locks up

Hello Bruce, now that I solve the meshing of the teeth,as soon as I reach compression the kick lever falls trough in a ratchet noise.
I guess I have to change quadrant and pinion but where to get them besides crap from India?
Many thanks Guirga

Re: Kick lever locks up

OK, as I can't see the bike I am guessing.

The ratchet noise is supposed to happen when the lever comes up not down? Are you sure you assembled the ratchet gear on the main shaft correctly?

My guess and I don't even know if this is possible, is you have the ratchet gear and ratchet reversed on the main shaft. Ratchet goes on first and then the gear.

If parts are needed, Draganfly or Russell Motors will have what you need.

Re: Kick lever locks up

As this happens when the engine comes onto commpression I'd also check that your crankshaft shock absorber nut hasn't come loose or was unsufficiently tightened when fitted, allowing the shock absorber cams to ratchet over each other. The nut should be tightened until it comes up against the crankshaft sleeve (the part the engine sprocket fits over) and then be knocked up tight.....Ian

Re: Kick lever locks up

Hi, thanks for your returns. Ian, you are the winner: the nut was loose. I had it locked by a lockwasher but it looks like I did notnotch it enough. Problem fixed.
