WD Norton 16H Carb

Looking to replace the needle jet and needle on my 276 AE/1BE carb.
Easy to identify the 106 size needle jet but no idea if the needle is the correct one.
There is a 6 stamped on the needle and there are 5 possible positions for the needle clip. Non of my literature gives a spec for the needle.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Re: WD Norton 16H Carb

Ok you have the correct needle as they are stamped 6 and have the five grooves for the clip. It should measure 81.32 mil long (3 and 3/16 inches).

Re: WD Norton 16H Carb

To add to that:- The standard settings are, 170 main jet, 6/4 throttle slide and clip in 2nd groove from top. Ron

Re: WD Norton 16H Carb

Thanks for the replies, was not sure on the needle as it can drop right through the needle jet. I thought the taper would stop it doing that.
The joys of old stuff!

Re: WD Norton 16H Carb

The original standard needle jet for the 16H was a 106.5. It makes a huge difference if you change from a carb set up for that. However if the carb has been optimised for a 106 you will have the same problem if you change back.
As I couldn't initially get hold of a 106.5 I used a 106 and had to raise the needle and go to a 190 main jet to compensate. I originally had to change the needle jet as it had worn oval and I couldn't return it to exactly the same axis.
I run a 19 engine sprocket in place of the standard 17 and the engine happily pulls that with a 45mph cruising speed and a top speed over 60.
Pre monoblocs don't tune like monoblocs/concentrics. Having experience with the latter I'd never found that changing the main jet could compensate for a different sized needle jet. Talking about this to a very old TT racer he opined that premonoblocs were indeed 'tricky'.
