Gearbox sprocket seal

Hi all

Should there be a felt gasket inbetween the sprocket and the gearbox face? I see one on the parts list but not 100% if thats where it goes?

Re: Gearbox sprocket seal

Tod, what is the part number of the felt seal that you don't know where it goes?

Re: Gearbox sprocket seal

That will be No61. Which will have little effect on the puddle of oil under your bike. The only way to stop that is to fit a sealed bearing 57 inside the box. Ron

Re: Gearbox sprocket seal

Part is 24-4232 where does this go? Its not arrived yet so unsure on the diameter until its in my hand so does it go under the sprocket or on the other side where the locking nut is? Also part 57 on the diagram has come as a sealed bearing so that should help

Re: Gearbox sprocket seal

It's not obvious from the drawing Tod, but it goes over the mainshaft and sits against the nose of the sleeve gear. The sleeve gear should have a taper in the bronze bush to accept it.
As Ron mentions it won't stop the drips.
A double sealed ball race bearing is the best bet to reduce the drips.

Re: Gearbox sprocket seal

I shall be servicing my gearbox and engine over the winter and was wondering whether wear in the mainshaft sleeve gear bush could contribute to the gearbox oil loss?

Re: Gearbox sprocket seal

Yes! A sealed bearing will stop oil leaking through the bearing but the oil can also leak between the main shaft and a worn sleeve gear bush, apart from other detrimental effects of a worn bush to the running of the gearbox. Ron

Re: Gearbox sprocket seal

Thanks for that Ron. I'll check them over when I stripthe box. I see Drags has the bushes but should I expect to have to ream them once fitted?

Re: Gearbox sprocket seal

Yes they probably will need reaming. The original bush was one long bush #54. The new bushes are usually two shorter ones, entered from each end with a gap in the middle. PM me if you want me to email the gearbox service sheets. Ron
