Re: Wheel Wobble

Is it a wobble or just a difficulty in going in a straight line...?
Make sure the rear tyre isn't under inflated, this will affect the steering..Check front tyre pressure which should be about 28-30psi with modern tyres...Make sure the steering head bearings aren't set too tight...Check that the two bolts holding the front of the tank aren't too long and contacting the steering stem....Check the condition and setting of the front wheel bearings to make sure they don't have excessive play at the rim...Check the overall condition of the fork links and bushes (though they would have to be pretty bad to affect the steering)...Ian

Re: Wheel Wobble

A badly seated tyre can be enough.

That said, the painted-over nuts on the forks show that nothing has been looked at or adjusted for yonks and there is a fair chance that whoever did that never intended to check tighten or adjust anything.

A full service under the 'Task' system would be a good starting point.

Yes, that was I was experiencing a few weeks ago! The front wheel of my WM21 was badly seated, it caused an enormous wobble. I inflated the tire completely and adjusted it. Now it's perfect.

Re: Wheel Wobble

Hi Ian

The front wheel wobbles as though it was trying to do what is known as a tank slapper, always seemed to occur when starting off from a standing start.

Thanks for the info, have done what you suggested, re set the front tyre pressure, have jacked the front wheel up off the ground, given the head stock bearing nut a slight nip up, I backed the tank bolts off and tightened them one by one to make sure they were not catching the steering stem.

The front wheel bearings have just a discernible amount of play at the rims.

I have checked the fork link bolts, backed the nuts and bolts off and adjusted them, I have re-greased all grease points on the fork links and bearings.

Took the side damper off and checked it out.

I run the bike with Dunlop K70"s usually with about 24/25 psi in the front?

Some suggest running the front as low as 20?

Took the bike around the block and it appears to be in good order after doing what you suggested. will take it for a longer run during the week.

Thanks Ian

Hi Rick

Thanks for the info have gone over and adjusted and greased everything as you and Ian suggested, now seems sorted.

Thanks

Re: Wheel Wobble

I'm about 11 stone and run my 16H on 27/30 psi...Although K70s have a 1950s tread pattern, they now have modern soft sidewalls that require higher pressures to achieve the same level of sidewall stiffness as older tyres...No harm in carefully trying higher pressures in small increments.

Re: Wheel Wobble

['Some suggest running the front as low as 20?'] ...
Definitely not with a K70..There is some confusion over tyre pressures as the original tyres had a high natural rubber content and stiff sidewalls...Consequently they could be run with lower pressures...
K70s are entirely synthetic and have no natural rubber content at all...They have little stiffness in the side walls and require the higher pressures to function correctly...Personally I think 25psi is the bottom end of the pressure needed..I run mine at 26-28psi at the front and about 30-32psi at the back (unladen)...I'll increase that rear pressure when the bike is loaded with camping gear to more like 36-37psi...I've run the K70s myself for years as I find they give good grip in all conditions...Ian
