Re: Girder fork top bolts (link bolts)

Out of interest Baz, when you drill the thread out of an 8mm nut, is there anything left to tap at 5/16"? Ron

Re: Girder fork top bolts (link bolts)

Appears to be Ok, the tap takes a good bite, I can lock the nuts well with spanner, no problems. If I remember correctly the drilled out nut was around 7.17mm.
In any case, they are working well and very much cheaper than the alternative, and no 3 weeks wait for nuts via Ebay.

If it works it works Baz. Can't argue with that. Ron

Re: Girder fork top bolts (link bolts)

The tapping drill for 5/16" Cycle thread is a letter J...(.276")...Nearest metric equivalent is 7mm...The O.D of an 8mm thread is .314"... So I guess you didn't fully drill it out?... Ian

Re: Girder fork top bolts (link bolts)

Ian, I need to check that measurement, I said I "think" that it was 7.17. 9:45 pm here, I'll check it tomorrow. One thing certain, that is a strong thread. In any case that is .17 of a mm, it works good.

Re: Girder fork top bolts (link bolts)

OK Ian,
the drill I used was:
19/64, .288", 7.33mm
Take your pick.

Re: Girder fork top bolts (link bolts)

What calculator are you using Baz:smiley: I make 19/64 = .296" 7.5mm Ron?

Re: Girder fork top bolts (link bolts)

Digital caliper, not the most expensive in the world, but the drill size is definitely 19/64. Only 1/64 less than the "correct" size.
Anyhow, it works fine and I am more than happy with the bolts/nuts.
