Re: New tyres

Hello Aaron,
It might be worth checking that your fuel cap vent isn’t blocked. In hot weather like today, 30 degrees in southern UK, without a good vent the tank can become pressurised and overcome the effectiveness of the float needle seal.

Re: New tyres

The carb isn't really likely to leak unless the float level is too high or the needle not seating. If there is any dirt coming through with the fuel, that will be more than enough to cause problems.

Re: New tyres

Do you guys go for a 3.50 rear and 3.25 front?

Re: New tyres

Hi Aaron
Nice to meet you and your pals on Saturday & good to see you on the forum
It’s full of knowledge from many well versed Individuals & with proven research to back it up
However - the spec bike you want to achieve is a personal goal for you to ride & be happy with - all here will help you - although down the line some fully qualified rivet counters & those still serving their time will chip in - be it with good humour behind
On your tyre selection - it’s a personal choice - I currently ride with ensign universals having had Dunlop K70 for years
The ensign profile is good enough to replicate war time & 40’s period profile & although 3.25 was specified original fitment I now run with 350 x 19 front & rear with tyre pressure of about 24psi up front & 26/28 on the rear due to carrier & rubbish in my bags
Ensigns & heidenau tyres provide good appearance, road holding in dry & wet conditions & good wear resistance - the K 70 is another great tyre but priced out of it these days
We are riding 75/80 year old bikes & not R1 rocket ships - we will never get to the end of their ability on the road - so I am happy with my lot - your choice at end of day Aaron
Keep posting your questions - you need to understand how your motorcycle works in order to keep it reliable & providing the silly grin factor we all get when we ride our own & make it home without an enforced stop

Aaron K

When I can get one I fit a 3.25 front.
I found the combination of a ribbed front with a K81 on the rear was magic.
But all of my riding is on bitumen
Down side is Avons are the only ribbed tyre I can find now days and I really don't need a 200 mph front on the M20
I ride a bit fast , but not quite that fast .

Re: New tyres

Thanks to you all for the info and advice.
I’m going to get the few small issues I have sorted and then I’ll be moving on with my shopping list ;)

You’ll be sick of me and my questions by the end of the restoration.

Aaron.

(If anyone knows of or where to get a WM Bakelite steering damper knob, that would be amazing)

Re: New tyres

Ian Wright advertised a week or so ago that he is getting some repros made. Put his name in the search box to find the post. Ron

Re: New tyres

Aaron, If you like autojumbles (and if you don't, you have the wrong era of motorcycle :relaxed: )Vintage Tyre are usually at both Netley (on the Friday) and Beaulieu...although they don't have much motorcycle stuff at Beaulieu so you'd be best off ordering.

Re: New tyres

Thanks Rik, I do like the autojumbles!! I’ve always been into Militaria and old toot so this bike suits me down to the ground.
Although I’ve not heard of either of the places you mentioned. I will be going to ardingly bike jumble on Saturday.
