I'm reassembling the brake pedal on the M20 but am finding quite a space between the pedal stop plate and the landing nut. I can't think of anything that I've added to put this so proud of the nut. Any thoughts?

You have the stop plate on the wrong side of the brake pedal pivot nut. Ron

That was it Ray. The plate was in front of the large nut rather than behind as in your helpful photo. Thanks!
