can somebody remind me whether it is necessary to first remove the points and camplate to remove the advance/retard cable from the mag on M20 (tight advance.

No. Just unscrew the cable end fitting from the top of the points block, pull the cable up which will expose the wine glass shaped fitting that the cable nipple is slotted into and slide the nipple out sideways. Ron
