N°1: liberation of Roeselare, Polish Forces
N°2: liberation of Bruges, September 12th 1944, resistance
N°3: liberation of Bruges, September 12th 1944, Canadian Forces
Thanks for pointing out where it was.
With help from street view I located one of them.
The Steenstraat in Brugge, he is riding away from the main square -Markt-
There is a banner across the street that blocks the view a bit
On the today picture you can see to the right a shop called Jelly Jazz (...) with the arch above the window and higher up 3 stone blocs protruding.
At the very end of the street you see the towers from the 'Provinciaal Hof' .
Nice ! and I did not even had to leave my house for it, thank you google....haha.
First picture is here.
It could be that the 'De' you see behind him is the start of 'De Smet'
just in case that you wonder, Yes I have better things to do.....but it is weekend!
About that last picture... are those Dutch resistance fighters? In a british bike? The rider is carrying gaiters, so I assume it wasn't a posed picture, it was their bike. Also the bike doesn't have the C number, but it has a blackout mask, so it isn't a civilian bike... does anyone know if there is any record of bikes being used by resistance? Just out of curiosity.
Dutch resistance fighters in Bruges? The Netherlands were still occupied in September 1944! We're in Belgium Albert!
The bike is a pre war civilian M20. No blackout mask, but a kerbstone... And no, there are no records of vehicles used by the resistance. This was all TOP SECRET, they couldn't take the risk that lists with names, registration numbers, addresses etc would fall in the hands of the Gestapo...
No worries ! we are used to be called : Danish or Germans or indeed Belgiums.
In return we point up our index finger because most of the time we know better haha !
