Crankcase markings

Hi all.
I found these markings on the crankcase of my 1941 WM20 this morning.
They are on the timing side just beneath the cylinder head. Does anyone know what the 65 relates to?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Crankcase markings

It's the WD inspectors stamp. 65 relates to the person himself. I gather that the larger factories would have had a resident inspector, whereas there were roving inspectors for smaller concerns.

Here is an actual inspector at the Welbike works. It's a still from a movie clip and just after this picture he stamps the headstock. Ron

Re: Crankcase markings

David because of the lightweight nature of the Welbike headstock tube, plus any corrosion over the years, the frame number and inspectors stamp are often very light and difficult to see. Here is my MK1 with frame number 555 and below it you can make out the inspectors stamp. Ron
