Hello WD Forum Members:
There is an opportunity to have some proper replica Volks air filter brass plates made through a process of acid etching to give the look and feel of raised letters of the originals. No silk screen imposter crap. There is a company vintagebrassplates.com in the UK that specializes in this process and makes replica data plates for a variety of vehicles. Ron Pier and I have made contact with the owner and he is willing to make a multiple run of plates, say 10 plates for 20 GBP each plus shipping and handling. Check out the web page. Pretty impressive. All that was needed was a high resolution photo of an original plate and the dimensional specifics, which Ron provided. An original plate in hand would be better, but the owner said a good photo and correct dimensions would work.
Please reply back to this post so we can see if there is enough interest to make this a go.
Doc
My error; did not catch that after I proof read it before submitting; gray matter not what it used to be; it will be Vokes as Ron sent a photo of an original one. Thanks Henk.
Doc
I don't need any, but can help with pictures.
But do be careful, there are at least 2 types of plates! And Cornucopia already reproduced the plates, not sure if he has them in stock though.
Cornucopia plates are just painted. So when the paint comes off....You have a brass plate!!! It's unusual for Peter as his reproduction stuff is usually second to none! Ron
The plates are ordered and will come as the originals in black with raised brass lettering. For those who have requested one without contact details (Mark, Steve and anyone else who wants one) Can you please add your email address. It's not Doc who has ordered them! :relaxed: Ron
The Australian Vokes filters can be recognised by their unique Serial number, which was 13895 followed by a varying number in a smaller font. The identification plate in Lex' picture is an Australian plate. The Vokes filters that were used on the WD motorcycles in 1945 had higher serial numbers. I've got two pictures here of original plates, one with the number 28353, one with number 25X80 (the X is also a number, but too faint to see which one). The plate in Henk's picture is 8554 and would pre-date the Australian filters (so probably 1940...?).
Is it not the case that the large (everything's relative !) numbers that were for sale in Australia at one time seem to have been supplied as spare parts for a stationary engine application ? This could / would account for a separate batch number and fitting kit.
- 11376 also looks like an "early" (1940?) number.
- 25880 is the one that I described as 25X80, same picture as I have.
- 13895-6733 is indeed an Australian Vokes plate.

And to add to the confusion over the serial numbers ! Here is the plate on my original filter which I bought from Stuart Bray about 30 years ago. 31808
And this one which is an original that used to belong to Ian Wright. 32474
So far the vague pattern for a non Ausie filter is 5 digits starting with a 1, 2 or 3?
No Ron... We all had it wrong apparently. Just discovered an original plate on the world wide web. This is how it should look like:
Here's another poor copy. Please note the 45 MPH on the Vokes filter...
My original filter shown in Rons photo was removed from an M20 I bought just to get the filter...It was one of three M20s bought back from Malta in unrestored condition...Ian
Hahaha, I can put another picture on from a poor copy, but Ron won't like that either!
Anyway, at least all you people know now what numbers NOT to use on the replica plates! or maybe Ron can stamp a series, and record them, so we will all know they are copies?
Still some elbow sets available for the Vokes filters, contact John O Brien, he has some in the UK, saves on shipping.
Cheers,
Lex
Lex ,
Im still very interested in the elbow set ..would I be better contacting Mr O,Brien as I am in the U.K ?
Thank You ,
Steve ..
Same for me - would I be better contacting John O'Brien - as I don't have a paypal account or anything like that - would prefer to pay either in cash or by cheque in £s.
