Re: Forum picture from Keith Chandler

Here's a similar one, I wonder if it was taken at the same establishment?

Re: Forum picture from Keith Chandler

I have just been having a rummage and have found I have an original copy of:-

Training of Motor Cyclists - Military Training Pamphlet No.24 dated 1939 and issued by the War Office having been prepared under the direction of The Chief of the Imperial General Staff - September 1939.

Re: Forum picture from Keith Chandler

I suspect that Keith's photo will have been taken at Catterick Camp which was the old Signals Depot.

My dad did a (non-motorcycling) course there in 1943...The wooden huts were probably pretty standard though.

Re: Forum picture from Keith Chandler

So out of curosity how many men were in a DR squad ?
And what sort of labour division ?
Two riders per bike ?

Re: Forum picture from Keith Chandler

The pictures seem to vary quite a bit in number, the 1941 version of the pamphlet Keith mentioned says that an instructor should only take 4 to 6 students at a push at any time which does seem to match the number of machines in the pictures so maybe the others were on theoretical parts of the course or just watched and waited their turn?

Re: Forum picture from Keith Chandler

These are of course training squads so no reflection of active units. How many bikes were out in the training film 'Army Motorcycling' ?

Re: Forum picture from Keith Chandler

Another one, with a WD/CO, M20, 16H, M20 and...??? Small headlamp, bulb horn, reminds me of the experimental lightweights. What is this...? A BSA WB30 perhaps?

Re: Forum picture from Keith Chandler

Quite right I'm sure Jan. I'd say the front mudguard is definitely BSA. Ron
