Timing gear lubrication.

I just want to check what the lubrication system is for the timing gears on my M20. How is the lubrication carried out ? I only ask as my valve chest oil hole was blocked for quite a while and they were running dry,so wanted to double check on the timing gear side of things !

Re: Timing gear lubrication.

Bottom end lubrication is the same as for B models. Oil to the cams is actively fed through the timing cover. The idler gear has to do with oil mist from the crankcase finding it's way through a small hole to the idler pinion spindle and bush.

Re: Timing gear lubrication.

Thanks. I checked my timing cover and all apears to be working correctly. However 1 of the 2 rubber feed seals is an ill fitting rubber 'o' ring. It may be working but does not look correct. Will get it changed.
Do the little holes in the side walls of the rubber seal housings do anything ?

Re: Timing gear lubrication.

I found the same when I stripped my engine down for a full rebuild, solid plug of silicon.
Think the old girl went through some tough times in Germany after she was sold off (sooo many layers of paint)!
But there seemed to be no discernible wear of the innards within!
