priming oil pump after rebuild?

hi folks,
just rebuilt the oil pump on my WM20 using Ian's excellent article in the tech section. After installing, do I need to prime the pump or does it self-prime?

thanks in advance for the help.

Re: priming oil pump after rebuild?

G'day Cas,
I've never bothered to prime the pump just made sure that the gears were lubricated on assembly.

Re: priming oil pump after rebuild?

I think if you unscrew the oil valve nut on the timing cover, the ball valve will let oil run down from the tank to prime the pump (might take a while depending on oil and temperature)

Re: priming oil pump after rebuild?

Priming the pump isn't necessary...I've built scores of engines and never done that...However, I do kick the engine over for a while with the spark plug removed to get oil circulating round the engine before start up...Ian

Re: priming oil pump after rebuild?

I'm restoring this bike for a friend (720cc). I had to dismantle and fettle the oil pump and fitted a NOS base plate. Today I kicked the engine over about 20 times with the valve lifter and when I started the engine, the oil was flowing back to the tank within 30 seconds. Ron
