BSA M20 Tool Box - how does it mount?

I have an original M20 box. The tab on the one side has been cut off, and it looks like it has some extra holes on the back and side. No sure though. Can someone tell me the size of the mounting tab so I can make a new one? And was it riveted or welded on?

Next, how did it actually mount to the motorcycle? I see a diagram on the main page for a bracket, but how did it attach to the frame?

And lastly, what went inside of the tool box? Looks like the inside has a pouch for papers or a manual.
Thanks in advance!

I don't seem to have pictures on file for the toolbox mounting, so will have to take some later unless someone else has some. The pouch is for the riders handbook and here is the toolkit......Good luck finding all the correct tools etc.....It can be a whole different hobby:relaxed:

Re: BSA M20 Tool Box - how does it mount?

Hi Van,

The mounting hardware for the toolbox is, as far as I know.

The green strap in Henks photo use's 2 round head slotted screws and nuts, the same as used on the front mudguard stay.
The same screw and nuts used on the tab, some people us bolts.
The clip, that can be hard to find, has a spacer washer inside.
The green bracket, were the tag is, fastens to the muffler bracket by means of a long bolt and washer.

Hope this helped.

Hi Henk,

I remember a disscussion awhile ago about contract plates mounted on the toolbox.
I see that on the bike, I guess that it is yours? early deluxe, with slotted knob.
Is the plate original to the box? Need to mount mine somewhere, have teardrop rear light.

Re: BSA M20 Tool Box - how does it mount?

Hi Dave,

The toolbox is replaced recently for what I think is the correct one for my BSA. The few old photos I have of BSA's with a torpedo tail light, or MT1130 as they are actually called, that also show their contract plate made me decide to do it like in this photo. I must say that I had to drill the holes for the contract plate in the tool box myself.

I actually think it's done like this on the KM20 BSA's with an MT1130 tail light and very likely done with the early WM20 BSA's like my WM20 2415.

Henk.

Re: BSA M20 Tool Box - how does it mount?

Thanks Henk,

I am sure that my bike souldn't have the MT1130 lamp, but I have got one, so will have to have a bit of artistic license, and do it like yours.

Re: BSA M20 Tool Box - how does it mount?

The Lucas MT 1130 was officially for the 1940 model year only, but they did start using them on the WD 'K' models. It requires a special number plate with a dimple in the top for the foot of the lamp (I think Jan still makes them). They were also used by Ariel around 1938/9. Ron

Re: BSA M20 Tool Box - how does it mount?

Hello all I have a spanner like number 13 in the diagram does anybody know what its for and the name on it is Chater Lea it could possibly something to do with the tapppets , I also have some spanners with the name Poysers on them wonder if anybody has heard of this name before

Re: BSA M20 Tool Box - how does it mount?

Thank you so much! I see how it mounts now, and I actually have the brackets still on my right rear frame, so that is awesome! My box is missing the lower right tab, so I am going to need to fabricate that.

Can you provide a width/length and metal thickness of this lower tab? Also, is it welded to the box?

I do not have a mudguard yet, so the rear mounting will attach to nothing for now.

And for tools, I'm having enough trouble finding the bike parts for now! I won't worry about that.

Charlie, 'Chater Lea' is a motorcycle name up to the mid 30's. So your spanner is not officially for a BSA although it will probably fit things. I think Poysers are Australian? Ron

Re: BSA M20 Tool Box - how does it mount?

This Australian hasn't heard of Poysers spanners, but maybe others have? A local Google search just reveals a car dealership in country Victoria.

Re: BSA M20 Tool Box - how does it mount?

About Poysers spanners.
I've had a look around Australian tool collecting sites & such, but I can't find a reference to them as a brand or company name.

I'll send you photos. I suck at putting pics on here.
